Area Churches Offer Prayers for Wall Brothers' Death, 6 Year-Old's Fatal Gunshot

Sunday masses have prayer offerings for Brandon Holt and others

On the Third Sunday of Easter, parishes took a moment to include in their prayers two Wall brothers who died in a car accident and a 6 year-old boy who died of a gunshot. At Saint Denis Church in Manasquan this Sunday, services progressed to the list of prayer offerings for the week, and included were the three recent fatalities. "For the young victim of the recent shooting in Toms River, his family, and all who are affected by gunfire, that they may seek God's wisdom, strength and grace, Lord hear our prayer,"  The young victim was Brandon Holt, 6 year-old, who was accidentally shot by a 4 year-old neighbor this past week in Toms River. MSG Varsity Will Feature Manasquan, Saint Rose Game

Feb. 9 girls basketball game will air Feb. 13

Mark your calendar: A local girls basketball game between Saint Rose and Manasquan High School will air on MSG Varsity. The Feb. 9 game will air 9:30 p.m. Feb. 13. The channel announced: "MSG Varsity has announced the New Jersey high school games that will be televised for the first half of February. The network will televise thirty-one events featuring New Jersey teams— including Boys and Girls Basketball games, Ice Hockey games and as Wrestling matches. Catholic Schools Week Celebrations Begin

Events to be held throughout Monmouth and Ocean

Catholic elementary and high schools across the country will be recognized as part of Catholic Schools Week, with special events for students at places such as Saint Rose and Saint Denis. The theme for this year is "Catholic Schools Raise the Standards," according to a press release from the Diocese of Trenton. The goal of Catholic Schools Week is to "promote the academic excellence and Catholic identity of Catholic schools in the US," the release added.  George V. Corwell, the Director of the Office of Education for the New Jersey Catholic Conference said he was glad that a proclamation from Gov. Chris Christie recognized the importance of the week. St. Vincent De Paul of Belmar Collecting Gift Cards, Frozen Foods for Hurricane Sandy

Collection efforts continue at Church of Saint Rose community

Hurricane Sandy ravaged Belmar and the generosity of those making cash donations, gift card donations and dropping off frozen food is still needed. Items are being collected and will be distributed by St. Vincent de Paul Society of Belmar at St. Rose Church. The church is one of many listed by the Diocese of Trenton as area Catholic churches organize efforts to continue assistance after Hurricane Sandy. For the full list, click here.
