Both the party boat crowd and shore-based locals getting in on the action
As local anglers try their collective hands at spring fishing after a tough winter all around, the striped bass seem to be cooperating as water temperatures slowly rise. Starting in the northern reaches of this column's publication area, the crew of the Big Mohawk out of Belmar finished their blackfish season this week and decided to dabble in the bass fishery on Tuesday. The result: everyone on board got their limit of stripers. "I know that is what so many of you have been waiting to hear," Capt. Chris wrote on the boat's website. The boat, which sails 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, had a similarly good day Thursday after taking Wednesday off. Few reports came in from the suds in the Manasquan and Point Pleasant areas, but anecdotally, anglers …

Traffic is shifted into eastbound lanes
Both westbound lanes of the Route 88 bridge in Point Borough are closed today until 3 p.m. and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, according to the state Department of Transportation (DOT). The traffic will be shifted into the eastbound lanes allowing one lane of traffic in each direction. Editor's Note: Patch was not informed of this until this morning and is posting this story shortly after getting the information. Information will be updated if any further information is announced.

Plan to close bridge in Point Pleasant cancelled due to high winds
The Route 88 bridge will remain open tonight, according to the state Department of Transportation (DOT). The original plan was for the bridge to be closed tonight until 5 a.m. Friday so a contractor for the Army Corps of Engineers could do work. However, "due to higher than normal winds they will not be working tonight and therefore the expected closure of the Rt 88 drawbridge will not be necessary tonight," according to a statement the DOT released Thursday night. Work will be done sometime after New Year's Day.

One westbound lane closed Tuesday; entire bridge closed Wednesday night
There will be a partial closure of the Route 88 bridge on Tuesday and a full closure overnight Wednesday into Thursday morning. The right, westbound travel lane over the Route 88 bridge will be closed on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to around 3 p.m. for routine maintenance of the electrical room on the bridge, according to the state Department of Transportation (DOT). That work will take only one day and the other three lanes will not be impacted. The DOT will close the bridge to traffic from 10 p.m. Wednesday until about 5 a.m. Thursday to allow for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to perform necessary underwater work in the Canal at this location, according to the DOT. This is the third such closure of the bridge in the past two weeks. The DOT …

Parade in Point Boro starts noon Sun.; party starts at 1 p.m.
What's the best way to make Point Borough's Halloween parade even better? Have a big party right after it! That's what the Point Pleasant Chamber of Commerce is planning for this Sunday. In the past, the parade that closes down Bridge Avenue for a couple of hours had started at 1 p.m. However, this year the parade starts at noon, to be followed by the Halloween "finish line party" at 1 p.m. So, everyone should keep in mind that Bridge will be closed down around 11 a.m. and stay that way for at least a couple of hours. Detours should be taken. The party is scheduled for 1 to 5 p.m. at Community Park, Bridge Avenue and Beaver Dam Road. The Jazz Lobsters, a big band orchestra, will play from 2 to 4 p.m. There is no rain date. There will be …

Local landmark filed for bankruptcy
The OB Diner in Point Borough had filed for bankruptcy, is up for sale and may be sold to its former owners. The popular local landmark, at Richmond Avenue and Route 88, has been dark and empty the last few days and there's a handwritten sign on the door that says "Closed, Will Re-open Soon." The Ocean Bay, or OB, Diner has not been sold yet, said Sandy Keeton, a Realtor handling the listing at the Point Pleasant office of Coldwell Banker Commercial Riviera Realty Inc. When asked to confirm a rumor that former owners are buying back the diner, Keeton said, "If that's what they told you" but would not elaborate. She would only confirm that Christo & Demetri LLC is still the owner. That name is also listed as the owner of the OB property, …

He was charged with disorderly conduct and swimming in the canal
A Wall man who jumped off the Route 88 bridge has been charged with swimming in the canal and disorderly conduct, police said Monday. Devon R. Kuehnen, 34, of the Allenwood section of Wall, suffered only a minor laceration to his nose after jumping from the bridge late Friday night and setting off a massive manhunt that lasted more than two hours, police said. Police, divers, first aid and fire department volunteers searched the canal and surrounding areas before finding Kuehnen safe on a canal bank early Saturday morning, police said. He was charged and released on a summons. Swimming in the canal is prohibited by borough ordinance. A bridge tender called the police at 11:48 p.m. Friday, saying a man had jumped from the bridge, prompting …

Strap supporting concrete crab snaps; outcome uncertain
A 47-foot-long horseshoe crab replica is now sunk at an artificial reef off the coast of Mantoloking, but not as planned. After Point Borough sculptor Chris Wojcik invested more than a year of time building and readying a concrete crab replica for its place at the Axel Carlson reef, it was finally sunk today. But the sinking turned out to be far more dramatic than anyone expected or wanted. Two hours were spent methodically preparing for the sinking, with the crew of the ocean crane Columbia New York filling the twin, 50-foot barges that support the structure with water, then strapping it to a crane to ensure the crab, which is welded to the barges, remained upright when it reached the ocean floor. But just before noon, the strap …

The Point Boro H.S. graduate gets another gold in what is her last Olympics
The US Women's Soccer team, including Point Borough High School graduate Christie Rampone, gets the gold in an Olympic re-match with Japan. The game, aired on NBC Sports, Ch. 69 on Comcast, just ended (4:36 p.m.). Team members are pulling on white T-shirts that say "Greatness Has Been Found" and posing for photos with the American flag. Rampone, clutching a corner of a flag, ran across the field, with a teammate holding the other side of the country's banner. The U.S. Women's National Team now has its fourth gold medal and third straight. This was the much-hyped and anticipated re-match with 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup champion Japan in the soccer finale at Wembley Stadium in London. Japan narrowly beat the U.S. in last summer's World Cup…
