Abraham Lincoln's Connection to Monmouth County

An old book at the Middletown Library tells the story.

Abraham Lincoln was a descendant of one of Middletown's first settlers, according to "The Story of Middletown: The Oldest Settlement in New Jersey" by Ernest W. Mandeville, the rector of Christ Church on King's Highway.  The 1927 book is available for perusal from the Middletown Township Public Library with a form of ID.  In celebration of the 16th President's birthday, here's an excerpt from Chapter 18, "Famous Men and Landmarks." Lincoln's Birthday A Public Holiday in New Jersey, But Not Observed Everywhere

Is today a holiday or not?

Abraham Lincoln’s birthday is just one week before Presidents Day, the holiday introduced as George Washington’s Birthday in 1885 and now a day to celebrate all presidents. While Presidents Day is recognized as a federal holiday, Lincoln’s birthday (Feb. 12) is not. Lincoln Day is a public holiday in Connecticut, Illinois, Missouri, New Jersey and New York but only some municipalities still observe it as one.
