Council votes 3-2 to submit pre-application to state's Green Acres program to host radio tower and building
Lake Como officials are forging ahead to remove property restrictions in Behrmann Park that could clear the way for the owners of WRAT-FM to erect a new radio communications tower on state-protected land. By a 3-2 vote, the borough council decided Tuesday night to submit the required "pre-application" for a diversion of 4,000 square feet of parkland to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) Green Acres program on behalf of WRAT's owner, Greater Media, Inc. Council members Brian Wilton, Patricia Tzibrouk and Jared Cohen voted in favor of the controversial resolution to submit the paperwork to NJDEP. Councilmen Douglas Witte and Kevin Lynch cast the two opposing votes. Councilwoman Marni McFadden-Lee was absent. How …

Ryan calls for a lake commission to be formed between Lake Como, Belmar and Spring Lake to purchase water pumps for flood control
Thanks to Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty, the lake that shares its name with the Borough of Lake Como did not overflow its banks. As a result, properties and residents in both towns were spared from flooding and the impact of such damage according to Mayor Michael Ryan. In the days before Hurricane Irene struck New Jersey's coast last month, Doherty took the lead in lowering water levels in both Silver Lake and the body of water known as Lake Como by providing two extra-efficient pumps, Ryan said at Tuesday night's council meeting. The pumps, belonging to the Borough of Belmar, withdrew about 3,000 gallons of water per minute from each lake through eight-inch pipes and transferred it back to the Atlantic Ocean, the mayor explained. With water …

Several eateries and establishments back in business despite flooding and power outages
It was “business as usual” – sort of – in many coastal towns the Monday following Hurricane Irene, as numerous businesses were open, yet many remained closed due to power outages. Several businesses were still “shuttered” Monday afternoon – mainly due to power outages – and there was little foot traffic along Main Street in Belmar, yet the boards were alive, and people were on the beach. Still not open however, was Casa Vittoria Pizzeria on Ocean Avenue. “We never lost electricity. Last night (Sunday), we were totally fine. The town pumped out a lot of Silver Lake in anticipation of the storm. Sometime between last night and this morning, the water level rose. We moved everything to higher ground,” said owner Nick Fuccilli, Belmar. “We …

Lieutenant governor takes tour of Shore to promote Labor Day tourism after hurricane
"Get the hell back on the beach." Those were the words Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno jokingly gave to the people of New Jersey while taking a tour of the Jersey Shore on Monday. Days after Gov. Chris Christie told sunbathers to "get the hell off the beach in Asbury Park" as Hurricane Irene barreled up the coast toward the Jersey Shore, his second in command made stops along the state's coast to survey the damage caused by the storm and to encourage tourism this Labor Day Weekend. Belmar was one of a four-stop helicopter tour of the Jersey Shore which included Atlantic City, Point Pleasant Beach and Asbury Park. "We're open for business," she said emphatically. Guadagno met with mayors Michael Ryan of Lake Como and Matt Doherty of Belmar and …

The annual George McCormack 5k hit Lake Como Sunday

This event began and ended at Bar Anticipation in Lake Como. Runners took off from right outside the establishment, ran through the borough and around the actual lake in Lake Como, and returned to Bar A five kilometers later. The run is dedicated to George E. McCormack, who was the captain of the Lake Como Police Department when he died on July 26, 2004. He was just 44 years old when he died of a heart attack.
