A new online mapping tool published by Rutgers University to help local officials plan for coastal flooding in coming decades.
At Point Pleasant Coast Guard Station, the rising ocean laps just below the quayside where cars are parked. At Lake Como, a park bench some distance from the current level the water becomes a tiny island as a user adjusts the slider to three feet, a level that many climate scientists believe will be normal by the end of the century. These and other scenarios are depicted in photographs simulating the effects of a rise in sea-level on the Jersey Shore. These simulations -- and others -- can be seen thanks to a new online mapping tool published by Rutgers University to help local officials plan for coastal flooding in coming decades. Parade route heads north on Main Street from Lake Como
The parade route for the Belmar-Lake Como St. Patrick's Day Parade on Sunday is similar to previous: a jaunt north on Main Street from Lake Como. Marchers, pipes and drums, civic groups and other paraders will check in and awaiting staging prior to the 12:30 p.m. kick-off of the parade. Businesses and homes near the parade route are known to have front-lawn festivities and viewing stations to help celebrate the massive swell of Irish pride, but the curb is still the place to get the best view. Attendees are expected to line up early for the best spots along the parade route, which starts at North Boulevard and F Street in Lake Como, which turns into Main Street once in Belmar. Power mostly restored by sunset, JCP&L reports
A transformer fire Tuesday afternoon popped atop a utility pole in Lake Como, leaving residents in the borough and neighboring Belmar without power. JCP&L crews responded after emergency responders addressed the small blaze around 2:15 p.m. By 5 p.m., power had been mostly restored through utility crews remained on the scene. Lake Como police, fire department and fire aid were dispatched to Margerum and 21st to 22nd streets to address the transformer fire around 2:15 p.m. The busted transformer created a power outage impacted a large portion of Lake Como into Belmar past 8th Avenue.

Parade marking its 40th anniversary this year
One of the area's largest events is less than a week away: the Belmar-Lake Como St. Patrick's Day Parade is coming Sunday, March 3. Now in its 40th year, parade day is for many an earnest celebration of Irish heritage, but for others it's simply a reason to be celebrate being Irish for the day. What does the parade mean to you? Spring Lake police says multiple calls made for juveniles atop ice in January
Just because it's frozen over doesn't mean it's safe. That's the warning local police hope juveniles and adults alike will heed now that bodies of water such as Spring Lake have frozen over. Spring Lake Borough Detective Sergeant Timothy Giblin said police have responded to multiple calls in January from concerned residents who spotted children on top the frozen water. "During the month this department responded to several calls of juveniles on the ice at the lakes," Giblin said. "We are asking parents to speak with their children to warn them of the dangers of being on the ice when it has not been deemed safe."
