Two more signs of "Point Beach Back in Business"
Jenkinson's rides are re-opening today on the boardwalk in Point Pleasant Beach and Farrell's Stout and Steak, 401 Broadway, is having its grand re-opening weekend. Both local businesses were hard hit by Superstorm Sandy, have undergone extensive renovations and are now coming alive in time for the beginning of spring and the promise of summer. The businesses join the ranks of many on Ocean Avenue, Broadway and the downtown area of Arnold and Bay avenues that are open and hoping the summer helps make up for what Sandy's wrath left behind. Council, following mayor's recommendation, votes for agreement that also includes Jenkinson's help in boardwalk repairs
It's a Christmas miracle. The Point Beach Council, on the recommendation of the mayor, voted unanimously Tuesday night for a compromise with Jenkinson's that calls for rescinding the early bar closing ordinance and revising the parking plan in exchange for Jenkinson's to drop lawsuits against those measures and to pay up to $1 million towards boardwalk repair expenses. Councilmember Michael Corbally was absent. Mayor Vincent Barrella announced in the early portion of Tuesday night's meeting that he and Municipal Business Administrator Chris Riehl had met a few times with Jenkinson's representatives, including two meetings last week with Pat, Anthony and Frank Storino, who have owned Jenkinson's, since 1976, that led to the agreement. …

Barrella said he'd be willing to pull ordinance if all lawsuits were first withdrawn
Point Beach Mayor Vincent Barrella said at Tuesday night's council meeting that he would be willing to repeal the proposed earlier bar closing ordinance if all lawsuits against that and the District 4 parking plan were first dropped. During his committee report, Barrella brought up the topic of the controversial earlier bar closing proposal that was temporarily "stayed" by the state Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control and still being fought in litigation filed by Jenkinson's and Martell's. "If the lawsuits were dropped, I'd have no problem dropping the midnight bar closing ordinance," he said. "But you can't withdraw an ordinance while litigation is pending." Beaches along the Shore in several towns are flying red flags today
Swimming bans have been instituted at a number of beaches at the Jersey Shore today due to dangerous rip currents caused by a passing storm. The National Weather Service's office in Mount Holly has issued a rip current warning through 9 p.m. today for all of New Jersey's ocean beaches and for Delaware. "High surf and large swells will produce dangerous pounding surf and rip currents at the beaches," the warning on the service's website reads. "These rip currents will be life threatening for anyone who enters the surf. Anyone visiting the beaches should stay out of the surf." State ABC won't let town enforce midnight bar closings yet
Point Beach bars can stay open until 2 a.m. for now until an appeal is decided, ruled the director of the state Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control on Friday night. The town is temporarily barred from enforcing an ordinance, adopted on May 15, that would have compelled all bars in Point Beach to stop serving alcohol at midnight starting Sunday, now that ABC Director Michael Halfacre has granted a "stay." Jenkinson's and Martell's are confirming they are turning down the town's "compromise" offer to stop serving alcohol at 1 a.m. Council and Mayor Vincent Barrella voted narrowly on Tuesday night to offer the 1 a.m. bar closing as a compromise, after the state Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) urged the two parties to try to reach a settlement. A Boardwalk offer to pay $800,000 over five years is "still on the table," despite that the state says a related town proposal "appears to be unlawful." Marilou Halvorsen, Director of Marketing for Jenkinson's Boardwalk, said late Tuesday afternoon that Jenkinson's and Martell's are still jointly offering the payment, despite that the state Department of Community Affairs is questioning the legality of a proposed ordinance that would compel bars to pay fees to stay open past midnight (see related story posted on top of home page). Negotiations ongoing, says town and Jenkinson's
Point Beach Council, citing ongoing negotiations with bar owners, voted unanimously on Tuesday night to table an ordinance that would close bars early or collect fees from them. At the meeting two weeks ago, a narrow majority of council voted to introduce the ordinance to help create more funding to help pay for police. The ordinance sets fees to stay open past midnight based on maximum occupancy. Councilman Bret Gordon said that he and Councilmen William Mayer and Michael Corbally have been meeting with owners of Jenkinson's and Martell's, negotiating for a solution acceptable to all sides. Authorities worried that the sunken Atlantic Traveler could pose a safety threat at Jenks
Some beachgoers say they have safety concerns about a wrecked fishing boat being so close to the Manasquan inlet rock jetty and Point Beach shore line. "They should at least put some signs up, telling people 'Boat Off Shore' and to stay away," said Ed Harris, who was walking on Jenkinson's Beach with his wife, Diane Harris, on Wednesday afternoon.
