Police chief said fire spread to seven homes that survived Hurricane Sandy
Seven Manasquan homes that survived Hurricane Sandy succumbed to flames this morning in what Police Chief Elliott Correia said was a "heartbreaking" fire. No injuries were reported in the fire that gutted three homes on First Avenue, Pompano and beachfront, and damaged nine others. "The initial report was four homes on fire," Correia said. "It had spread to seven." In addition to those seven, other neighboring houses faced smoke, heat and water damage. The total number of affected homes reaches one dozen structures, Correia said. The police chief said 50-75 emergency responders rallied at beachfront and First Avenue homes on the 290 block of Manasquan for about an hour for a fire that will be investigated by Manasquan and Monmouth County …

New Jersey Natural Gas repairing and replacing damage to infrastructure
New Jersey Natural Gas is more than halfway done with the long list of inspections, repairs and, lastly, restoration of gas service to portions of Manasquan destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. The gas company announced that 64 percent of the borough's service installations are complete. "In Manasquan, we have completed 120 service installations, 64 percent. We continue to repair and replace services, as needed, throughout the rest of our territory," announced the utility. The progression of the project included a Nov. 24 announcement that the damaged main along First Avenue was replaced. I applaud our first responders and their service to others. They did a notable service to the community. It is a shame that they are put at personal risk by a planning board that allows houses to be built with so little space between them. The area east of the creek is a fire out of control waiting to happen that endangers residents and responders as well. Who does it benefit when the town allows…   more ›
