DEP Commissioner: sand could be piped over Route 35 to oceanfront
The ongoing process of removing debris from the floor of Barnegat Bay will eventually evolve to the next step in the overall cleanup effort: removing sand that got pushed into the waterway. That phase of the project should begin in the next four to eight weeks, said New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Commissioner Robert Martin during a conference call with a number of reporters Tuesday. "While we do the debris removal, we are already putting plans in place and getting permitting with the Army Corps of Engineers to do the dredging activity," said Martin. "I'm hoping within the next month or two we can start doing that dredging as well." The bay is steadily being cleared of large pieces of debris left over from Superstorm …

Sammy will move to a foster home, hospital staff says
The cocker spaniel who authorities charge was brought to an animal shelter by his abuser was released from a Monmouth County animal hospital Monday. "Sammy," estimated to be about 13 or 14 years old, was brought to the Monmouth County Animal Shelter by Keith Morgan, 56, of Brick, who told staff that he and his wife, Shauna Ewing Morgan, 43, found the dog in a garbage bag on the side of Belmar Boulevard in Wall. But authorities later said an investigation showed the couple owned the dog, who was covered in feces and urine and encased in its own matted fur, unable to walk. Less than a month later, Sammy walked out of the Red Bank Veterinary Hospital on his own, a social media post from the hospital said Monday. "It is with happy tears that …

3-year-old Cocker Spaniel named Aby appeared to be in 'decent shape'
Authorities have removed a second dog from the home of a Brick couple suspected of abusing a 13-year-old Cocker Spaniel, then claiming they found it on the side of the road. The dog removed Thursday afternoon was a 3-year-old Cocker Spaniel named Aby, said Victor "Buddy" Amato, Chief Humane Law Enforcement Officer for the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The dog was voluntarily handed over to officers by Keith E. Morgan, 56, and Shauna Ewing Morgan, 43, of Sawmill Road, who have been charged with abusing another dog named Samurai. "We were getting anonymous tips for the last few days that there might be a second animal in the house," said Amato. "The anonymous tips were describing a mobile cocker spaniel, …

Work begins to pull debris from Barnegat Bay
Even one of Germany's finest automobiles was no match for Superstorm Sandy. It's tough to tell the exact model this car was, but the body style and taillights indicate it's a midsize Mercedes-Benz, probably from the 1990s. Crews found it in Barnegat Bay Monday afternoon and towed it to the boat ramp at Traders Cove Marina off Mantoloking Road in Brick, where it was hauled out from the murky depths. The muddied car is suspected to have gotten washed into the waterway during Sandy. A contract was awarded by the state last month to Crowder Gulf, a Theodore, Ala.-based company, to remove debris from the northern and central portions of Barnegat Bay, hopefully in time for the summer boating season. Department of Environmental Protection …

Brick Police are still investigating a Saturday evening accident that sent two teens to a trauma center. "While the juveniles were crossing the intersection, the light turned green for southbound traffic," said Drew, in a statement. Two of the four juveniles were struck by Nancy Rothenberg, of Brick, who was driving a 2006 Mercury Mariner and travelling southbound in the right lane. Drew …

Stolen air conditioning unit leads to Brick man, Point Pleasant man
A Brick man and a Point Pleasant man have been arrested and charged by Brick police with stealing three air conditioning units from the storm-damaged home of a Brick resident. The pair are now being investigated for additional thefts in the area as well. The home that had its air conditioning units stolen had been damaged during Superstorm Sandy and was vacant at the time of the theft, which the resident reported to police Feb. 15, Sgt. Keith Reinhard said. The Carrier units were valued at about $12,000, and were only eight months old, since the home had been newly constructed before the storm struck, said Reinhard. An investigation by Detectives Bob Shepherd, Michael Feeney and Thomas Cooney eventually led to the arrests of Steven A. …
