Monmouth firm worked on Belmar boardwalk plans, but is under investigation for alleged Pay-to-Play violations
Re-examing Belmar's relationship with Birdsall Engineering Group, the firm where several current and former employees face alleged Pay-to-Play violations, won't come until some projects underway are finished, officials discussed tonight. But Belmar council members said the borough administration should discuss whether it should use Birdsall for future projects. Open projects now underway with Birdsall are the boardwalk rebuild and other beachfront projects. Councilman Jim Beam brought up the issue in tonight's council workshop session, after hearing news of an indictment yesterday of seven Birdsall employees and shareholders, including one who previously worked as Brick Township administrator. FEMA is partially to blame for extra money, engineering firm says
The Belmar Borough Council on Wednesday approved an additional $1.4 million for the re-construction of its boardwalk, even while the reason given for the extra money has changed. The vote, which followed a lengthy discussion among council members spurred by a short presentation by the borough’s engineers, was 4-0. Councilman James Bean abstained. The vote brings the total price of the boardwalk reconstruction to just shy of $8 million, up from the original bid of $6.6 million, an increase of about 17 percent. Woman charged with hiding Birdsall's political contributions as personal contributions, a violation of Pay-to-Play laws
A Bradley Beach woman is the second employee of Birdsall Engineering to plead guilty to a scheme that skirted the state's Pay-to-Play Act, officials said. The woman disguised illegal corporate political contributions as personal contributions of employees of the firm, a large Monmouth County-based engineering firm that in the past has held contracts for Belmar, Toms River and elsewhere, according to state Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa's office. The scheme allegedly allowed the firm to fraudulently avoid the restrictions of New Jersey’s Pay-to-Play Act, said the state attorney general in a news release today. Eileen Kufahl, 48, of Bradley Beach, pleaded guilty Feb. 12 to making prohibited corporation contributions through employees, a …
