Seal near Bridge Avenue jetty
A seal was spotted on a Bay Head beach and captured in this video and photo at about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. Bay Head Patrolman Zachary Keller said he responded to the scene at about 2 or 2:30 p.m. Wednesday and that the seal did not appear to be injured. "He looked like he was just resting," Keller said. The center will close 7 p.m. Sat.
The FEMA Center at the firehouse on Bridge Avenue in Bay Head will close for good at 7 p.m. Sat. "State and federal officials have been paying close attention to how many applicants are visiting centers throughout the state," says a prepared statement from FEMA. "Over the past weeks, the number of individuals seeking help at the center in Bay Head has dropped, indicating the information needs of survivors in the area have mostly been met." Similarly, FEMA is also closing a disaster recovery center in Newark due to declining visits. Since the Bay Head disaster recovery center opened Nov. 16, there have been nearly 2,000 visits from Hurricane Sandy survivors, the statement says. My brother-in-law lost most of his belongings in a …

Sheila Dean is one of two top officials with the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine. Another official there has informed me that getting this close to a seal is a violation of federal law and also very dangerous for the seal and the person approaching it. So, please, to our readers, keep your distance and call the Marine Mammal Stranding Center if you see a seal (yes, I did call before …   more ›
