Twelve sawed-off shotguns and an AK-47 were among the illegal guns collected last weekend.
More than 1,500 weapons, including 45 illegal guns, an AK-47 and 15 other assault rifles, were netted by the state-run gun buyback program held in two Monmouth County locations last weekend, officials said. A total of 1,581 guns were collected in Asbury Park and Keansburg on March 8 and 9. This was the fourth buyback program in the county, supervised by the State Attorney General's Office. The state has now collected 7,092 firearms from state-run buyback programs, said Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa. The buybacks are funded by money forefitted in criminal busts. In Monmouth County, law enforcement officers paid an average of $132 per gun, for a maximum of three guns per person. The county program cost $209,175 last weekend, officials said…

Miracle Plunge will take place near Convention Hall March 16
Due to ongoing construction on Belmar's oceanfront, the annual Miracle Plunge will move to Asbury Park for a March 16 dip in the Atlantic. The event, hosted by the New Jersey Elks, will benefit the Children's Specialized Hospital, and hundreds are expected to brave the very cold ocean waters to raise money for the hospital. "Freezin' for a Reason" will take place in Asbury Park, since normal venue Belmar was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy and Ocean Avenue remains closed as a construction zone. The Children's Hospital plunge's check-in starts at 10 a.m. and the plunge is at 12:00 p.m. at Asbury Park Convention Hall. To sign up for the Miracle Plunge, visit: www.miracleplunge2013.kintera.org or call 732-684-8048. Last year's plunge in Belmar …

Fine is $35
With March 1's switch to paid parking in Asbury Park, the city is one of the earliest to put its metered parking into effect. Free parking still exists in many places through April, but you've got to shell out some quarters starting Friday in Asbury Park. The Asbury Park waterfront, the Cookman Avenue corridor and metered parking spots elsewhere in Asbury Park will be in effect starting March 1. The rate for all numbered spaces on Ocean Avenue is $2.00 per hour with a maximum limit of 3 hours. The rate for all other numbered spaces is $1.00 per hour without any time limits. Record Swap and Flea Market brings out Sunday shoppers
Whether it's the warm pop of a vintage Stax Record, the fiery red-orange mane of the leader of the Thundercats, or the nuclear pink flowers on a mod shift dress that excites you, Sunday's event at Asbury Lanes would raise the eyebrows of many a collector. Tables of vintage superhero masks, 1980s WWF wrestling t-shirts, Doc Martin boots and handmade earrings were among the diverse offerings. But expanding your record collection was the centerpiece of the afternoon event, held at the vintage bowling alley, bar and live music venue in Asbury Park. Crates upon crates lined tables and floors as shoppers poured over offerings in between trips to the bar or Snack World Inferno short order grill inside the Lanes. Here's a short video from a day at…

Jan. 12 Wonder Bar concert will both honor Clarence Clemons and raise money for schools
It's the Big Man's birthday, but it's also a chance to help get local schools' music programs hitting the right notes again. With many local school facilities affected by Hurricane Sandy, organizers to the first "Clarence Clemons Day" concert are also raising money for programs where instruments and sheet music were damaged by the storm. Jan. 12, the Wonder Bar in Asbury Park will host "Celebrating Clarence: The Big Man's Birthday Benefit" honoring Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band longtime saxophonist, who died in 2011. New Jersey newly declared "Clarence Clemons Day" is Jan. 11 — this year's will be the first celebration. Organizers announced: "This event will also serve as a benefit to raise money for local school district music …

An upcoming concert will benefit five charities that have aided and continue to aid victims of Hurricane Sandy.
Suffice it to say, On the Beach: A Sandy Relief Concert is no 12-12-12 Concert for Sandy Relief. Perhaps that’s not such a bad thing. The latter concert raised millions of dollars for the Robin Hood Foundation’s Sandy relief fund with an aged lineup of sometimes-shirtless rock icons and was broadcast throughout the world on television, radio and the Internet. The concert helped highlight the need that followed Hurricane Sandy and has resulted in millions of grant dollars being distributed to various organizations, a majority of them in New York City. But, the concert left promoter and Jersey Shore native Tony Pallagrosi feeling a bit detached. Despite Jersey representation at 12-12-12 courtesy of The Boss and Bon Jovi, the show was held at…

"SantaCon" is one big town-wide party and charitable collection, dressed in red velvet and white fur.
Here comes Santa Claus. Approximatey 500 of them, organizers of the 2012 SantaCon in Asbury Park estimate, for city-wide fun and charity this Saturday. Which of these Santas is the real one? It might be hard to tell, but one of these Santas calls himself Swayze Claus, and he's one of the jolly old elves in charge around SantaCon. The mission of SantaCon? "This year, beautiful Asbury Park will come alive with red and white merriment as we gather to sing songs, play reindeer games, spread joy, and give to those less fortunate," said Swayze Claus. Participants should bring an unwrapped toy and/or a nonperishable food item, which will be donated to charity, and expect to have a good time among hundreds of Santas, elves, scrooges, Grinches, …

Flyover on Thursday found no evidence of algae bloom, DEP says
Because of reports of greenish brown, dirty-looking water at the beaches around Asbury Park, Avon and Bradley Beach, the state Department of Environmental Protection is looking into the water quality off Shore Area beaches, according to its website. The Monmouth County Health Department has identified a variety of species of dinoflagellates -- planktonic plants -- in the waters at the those beaches. These microscopic plants are generally not toxic to humans but in very heavy concentrations may be toxic to fish and shellfish because they remove oxygen from the water, according to the DEP. Additional samples are being collected by the DEP's Bureau of Marine Water Monitoring and at the beaches by the Monmouth County Health Department, …
