Flounder, Bass Biting; Remember to Register

After registering, hit 'em while they're hot!

While winter flounder anglers had their fill of action this week, striped bass hunters also dialed into plenty of action from the bay to the ocean. We'll go north to south. "Hot" fishing was reported from last weekend through this week on board the Golden Eagle out of Belmar. The crew battled Thursday's strong winds and, while marks were located, the bite was slow. Still, a few keepers were hauled over the rail. South winds put a damper on the action aboard the Big Jamaica out of Brielle on Wednesday, but the crew had hoped for a rebound Thursday as the winds switched west. Nothing was heard on the results. Max Trax seems like a good idea. At $299, shouldnt there be 4 tracks? Arent they intended for 4X4 use. If the vehicle is down to the frame, and all 4 wheels suspended, still going require a shovel. Ill keep my money, and use it for gas.   more ›

Winter Flounder off to Red-Hot Start

A few hours in, blazing hot flounder bite reported across the region

Time to throw on some shorts and a t-shirt to catch some winter flounder. Anglers took to Barnegat Bay early Friday morning to kick off the annual, early-season hunt for the tasty cousin of the summer flounder. Usually, opening day of winter flounder season is an exercise in endurance. It's a chance to shrug off winter-induced cabin fever and deal with chilly temperatures if it means getting on the water and bringing a fillet home for dinner. It's different this year. With temperatures in the mid 70s, it feels more like the start of summer flounder season in May. A few hours into the season opener, early reports indicate the flounder bite is as hot as the weather.
