Mary Kate Cashman among 35 spellers knocked out in brutal second round
For some four hundred years it was used as the basic monetary unit of the Netherlands. But when the European Union in 2002 standardized the monetary system on the continent, the Gulden was replaced with the Euro. The Gulden, relegated to a footnote in European history, also eclipsed the chances that Mary Kate Cashman, St. Rose Grammar School fifth grader, would move on to compete in the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee. Cashman, 10, was one of 53 spellers who were tripped up by obscure words in the regional Spelldown competition, held at Monmouth University Monday night. The Spelldown featured 99 champion spellers from Monmouth, Ocean and Middlesex counties who had all won their school-wide spelling bees – each vying for the …

Belmar parochial school sustained roof damage during storm, schedules late-week opening
St. Rose Grammar School in Belmar, closed since Hurricane Sandy, is set to re-open Thursday, officials said. The pre-kindergarten-to-grade 8 parochial school sustained roof damage during the storm, but was spared from the intense flooding that the Catholic parish’s high school took on. In a recorded message sent to parents Monday night, Sister Kathy Nace, principal of St. Rose High School, said the grammar school would re-open Thursday, three days later than expected. Nace said a communication error was to blame for the delayed opening of the 6th Avenue school. She was not more specific. The high school, located on 7th Avenue, is operating on a limited schedule to accommodate pre-planned class trips while scads of volunteers and a disaster…

Grammar school team joined New York Red Bulls on field for MLS opening ceremony
The St. Rose Grammar School boys soccer team got a taste of the "big leagues" last week when it lined up alongside the New York Red Bulls on the field of their northern New Jersey arena, officials said. The Major League Soccer (MLS) team invited the St. Rose boys to kick off their 2012 season in style, letting the youngsters participate in their Sept. 19 opening ceremonies on the field at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, according to school spokesperson Kristi Gorman. The sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-graders, donning Red Bulls uniforms, also stood alongside the professional players during the National Anthem before a crowd of more than 10,000, Gorman said. The 2012 St. Rose Grammar School boys soccer team is: David Calloway, Andrew Huisman, …

Aine Donohue, an eighth-grader at St. Rose Grammar School in Belmar, misses top 10 finalists at Spelldown Regional Spelling Bee
A word with Middle English origin meaning woe and sorrow was the downfall of Wall's Aine Donohue, whose hopes for a bid on the Scripps National Spelling Bee were dashed at a regional competition Tuesday night. But not before about 89 other spellers at the regional Spelldown held at Monmouth University's Pollak Theater Monday and Tuesday were eliminated from the annual spelling competition. Aine narrowly missed advancing to the top 10 finalists after she misspelled "wellaway," during the fourth round of the Spelldown's second night of competition on Tuesday at Monmouth University. Before taking her best shot at the interjection refering to woe and sorrow, Aine asked pronouncer Bill Zapcic to define the archaic word and use it in a sentence…

Eighth-grader hopes to avenge last year's third-place finish at regional spelling bee
Aine Donohue made St. Rose Grammar School history in December when she won her third-straight school spelling bee, earning a spot in the regional finals this coming spring. Aine, an eighth-grader from Wall Township, is the first St. Rose student to represent the school at the regional competition held at Monmouth University three years in a row — at least nobody else has ever accomplished that feat in the last 30 years, according to Mary Burns, a third-grade teacher at St. Rose who's moderated the school's spelling bee for as many years. Two years ago as just a sixth-grader, Aine placed 10th at the regional bee, and perhaps not surpsingly, last year she came in third place. This year she's looking to take first place at the March 12 …

St. Rose Grammar School students to learn about various communities across the nation
They say that every journey begins with the smallest step. For students from St. Rose Grammar School in Belmar, a trip across the country began with a few steps to the Belmar Post Office. Students in Mary Burns' third grade class recently took the first step in an educational journey throughout the United States by participating in the Flat Stanley project. Inspired by Jeff Brown's children's book Flat Stanley, the students will learn about numerous communities throughout the country through the project. Each child created their own Flat Stanley, which was then mailed to friends or family in different parts of the nation. Each Stanley is sent with a travel journal and a request to take photos of him in front of landmarks or other special …

First award ceremony of the year celebrated
On Friday, Nov. 4, students from St. Rose Grammar School were honored during the first Virtue Awards ceremony of the school year. Two students from each grade, kindergarten through eighth grade, were selected to receive the award, which recognizes students who display extraordinary kindness and caring. St. Rose Grammar School Principal William Roberts awarded each student a certificate which states: "this student exemplifies a positive and productive attitude and lives the Gospel message. The student demonstrates the value of Kindness by a Christian response to being a member of the community." The students were then honored during a mass at St. Rose Church.
