The annual George McCormack 5k hit Lake Como Sunday
Though the rain washed most of this past Sunday away, nearly 150 individuals took advantage of the beautiful morning in Lake Como, as they participated in the 8th annual George McCormack 5k run. This event began and ended at Bar Anticipation in Lake Como. Runners took off from right outside the establishment, ran through the borough and around the actual lake in Lake Como, and returned to Bar A five kilometers later. The run is dedicated to George E. McCormack, who was the captain of the Lake Como Police Department when he died on July 26, 2004. He was just 44 years old when he died of a heart attack. Lake Como’s Mayor Mike Ryan noted McCormack was a beloved figure in the borough, and all borough officials were quite happy to have such an …

2,500 runners took over Sea Girt on Sunday
On Sunday, Sea Girt held its 20th-annual Sea Girt 5k. The event served its purpose in raising money to support troops. It also served as an opportunity to bring the community together. Before runners sped off, a salute to the troops was made with Honorary Marshal US Army Brigadier General James Grant and the National Anthem was sang by the cast of Algonquin Art’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. At about 8:30 a.m., close to 2,500 runners were off - an overwhelming group of armed forces, veterans and their supporters. “This race has grown from 800 to 2,500 over the past six years that I’ve taken this over,” said event director Mike D’Altrui. “Every year we try to pick a cause to fundraise for. Participants had fun as they competed in annual run, swim race
The heat didn't stop the nearly 150 participants who treaded the water and pounded the pavement and boards at the 31st Annual Ocean Grove Biathlon Saturday morning. The run and swim race which was founded 31 years ago is a very competitive race to the bigger runners but is open to anyone, according to event director Tina Duda who has been organizing the event for the past nine years. “It started out with just local Ocean Grovers running it and it has become bigger every year to the outskirts. A lot of the Jersey Shore Running Club people run it every year,” said Duda. Organized and punctual, Duda rounded participants for line up at 9 a.m. on Ocean Avenue in front of the Ocean Pavilion in Ocean Grove. After the National Anthem, the athletes…

There’s still time to sign up for this Saturday’s 16th Annual Avon 5K Run to benefit the borough’s first aid squad. The sooner you sign up, the better your chances of having commemorative tee-shirt to wear during the race and afterwards according to Anne Outwater, a member of the Avon 5K Committee. “We guarantee the first 1500 registered a shirt,” Outwater said. Based on last year’s participation, squad members expect 1500 to 2000 runners and walkers to travel the route, which equals about 3.1 miles or 16,404 feet. All proceeds go directly to the private, non-profit, all-volunteer squad that provides Avon with emergency medical and rescue services, 24 hours a day, seven days a week at no charge. “This is our largest fundraiser for the …
