Shrimp Box re-opened, Alex's Inlet Bait and Tackle and Red's Lobster Pot to follow
Flooded and beaten to a pulp by Sandy, a few restaurants and a bait and tackle shop in Point Pleasant Beach near the Manasquan Inlet are just beginning to come back to life. The Shrimp Box and Outside the Box Patio Bar, 75 Inlet Dr., re-opened Wednesday afternoon for the first time since Sandy pushed five feet of water into the restaurant overlooking the harbor. Alex's Inlet Bait and Tackle Shop, 9 Inlet Dr., is shooting for a March 15 opening and Red's Lobster Pot, 57 Inlet Dr., for an April 17 opening. The Manasquan Inlet was rushing over the bulkhead, into the parking lot on Inlet Drive on Wednesday, as the Shrimp Box was serving its first customers since the end of October. "The Shrimp Box & Outside the Box Patio Bar is opening for …

Smart phone apps can help if you're in a hurry
As the song goes, you can't hurry love. But while the classic Supremes song offers plenty of precious words to keep you hangin' on, unfortunately the MoTown hit has no advice on the rush to find reservations the day before Valentine's Day. If you managed to not secure dinner and lodging plans for a romantic night out, and are thinking love won't come easy, you still can wait until the last minute. As is often the case the Internet is your friend here. OpenTable.com, which also has a smart phone app, has dozens of local restaurants registered on this website, allowing you, the hungry romantic procrastinator, and your date to find an open table for dinner tomorrow (or any other day). A search of local ZIP Codes finds Manasquan and Belmar …

Negotiations ongoing, says town and Jenkinson's
Point Beach Council, citing ongoing negotiations with bar owners, voted unanimously on Tuesday night to table an ordinance that would close bars early or collect fees from them. At the meeting two weeks ago, a narrow majority of council voted to introduce the ordinance to help create more funding to help pay for police. The ordinance sets fees to stay open past midnight based on maximum occupancy. Councilman Bret Gordon said that he and Councilmen William Mayer and Michael Corbally have been meeting with owners of Jenkinson's and Martell's, negotiating for a solution acceptable to all sides. He said that while those negotiating sessions involve only the two boardwalk businesses, he has also spoken to owners of smaller bars and restaurants…

Delicious vegetarian and vegan restaurant grows in Belmar
Dining out is not always easy for vegetarians and vegans. In fact, it’s rather difficult and can often be a burden. You don’t want to be that person at the table that orders a menu item and then completely butchers it and makes it their own. I’m guilty of this for sure, and it’s not fun. With an increasing percentage of the population becoming vegetarian or vegan, it’s apparent that we are in need of more places to dine that cater to these diets. A 2000 poll found that 2.5% of the US population were vegetarians, and PETA maintains that this has grown to 4% since then, with 19,000 people making the healthy choice to become vegetarian each week. There is a major shift in the way people are eating and the restaurant business should recognize …

Chef Chris Brandl is ready for the summer season. With two Belmar restaurants as well as a thriving catering and mobile food business, the veteran of Jersey Shore fine dining has rolled out an entirely new approach to his operation. "Reinventing is what we're doing," Brandl said. "We're getting current with our way of being." "I just want to get current on who we are," he added. Brandl's restaurant — appropriately named Brandl — has recently undergone a dramatic facelift. Located at the intersection of 9th Avenue and Main Street in the borough's Pyanoe Plaza, Brandl has taken on what it's owner calls a "contemporary, industrial look," highlighter by new hardwood floors, orange walls and high ceilings. The menu will see some major changes…
