Roses Report: Success Across The Board

The majority of the teams saw positive results this past week at St. Rose High School.

It was a pretty typical week at St. Rose High School. The basketball teams continued to their dominance, the wrestling team continued its upward trend and the ice hockey team got a win. Oh, and there was snow which meant that an entire day of games was postponed. Let's not waste any more time and get to this week's Roses Report. Boys Basketball The Purple Roses pushed their record to a perfect 10-0 this week with two more wins. The first came last Saturday against Monmouth Regional High School. Mark Kukoda scored 14 points and Brandon Carroll added 10 points to lead the Roses to a 43-32 win over the Falcons. On Thursday night, the Roses cruised over Mater Dei Prep, 51-22. Girls Basketball Thanks to the snow, the girls basketball team only …

A Perfect Ten

The St. Rose High School boys basketball team downed Mater Dei Prep to improve to 10-0 on the season.

Dennis Devaney and his coaching staff thought they had a special group of players heading into the basketball season. The head boys basketball coach at St. Rose High School even admitted as much at a school pep rally. "I introduced the team in general as the best kept secret in the Shore [Conference]," said Devaney. "We said it starting in the summer. We're good. Because of the season we had last year we were overlooked this preseason." It's tough to overlook the Purple Roses now after a 51-22 win over Mater Dei Prep on Thursday night. The win pushed the Roses record to 10-0 on the season and 5-0 in Class B Central. The 29-point win is certainly a comfortable one, but it wasn't the prettiest of victories. The Roses struggled after the …

Roses Recap: St. Rose rings in the New Year with a bang

The Purple Roses started 2011 the best way possible -- by winning.

If the beginning of 2011 is any indication as to how St. Rose High School is going to fair this year then the Purple Roses better start to make room to their trophy cases. Just a week into the year, they already have one title to add to their resume. Let's take a closer look at some of the results in this week's Roses Recap. Boys Basketball The Purple Roses started the year off in the best way possible -- with a championship. The fifth seeded Roses paid no mind to their seed as they dropped the second seeded Panthers of Point Pleasant Borough High School, 52-38, in the WOBM Christmas Classic final on Sunday. Cliff Clark and Mark Kukoda each scored 15 points to give the Roses their second title in the tournament and first since 2003. Their …

Purple Roses make it two in a row

The St. Rose High School wrestling team cruises by The Frisch School to get back to .500 on the season.

One win is certainly nice, but two wins in a row and you can officially say you're on a streak. Well, the St. Rose High School wrestling team is going streaking. And it's the first time in years that the program has been able to say that. Coming off a recent win over Keyport High School on Tuesday night, the Purple Roses rolled to a 63-9 win over The Frisch School from Paramus on Thursday night at the McCann Activities and Athletic Center. "It feels good," said head coach Kurt Pellegrino of the win streak. "I'm very excited for [the winning streak]. We're not the St. Rose that is just going to be run over anymore." Pellegrino noted that the two-match win streak matches the school record for consecutive wins. Their 2-2 record at this point …

Early holiday treat for Purple Roses

The St. Rose boys basketball team overcomes a slow start and the hot shooting of Point Pleasant Beach to bring home a 57-54 victory.

Christmas may have come early for the St. Rose High School boys basketball team. At least that's how guard Cliff Clark felt after the Purple Roses went into Point Pleasant Beach and snuck away with a 57-54 win over the Garnett Gulls in a key Class B Central showdown. Clark, who finished with a game-high 18 points, admitted that a game like this allows the holidays to start off on the right foot. "It's a great Christmas present," said Clark of the win. The Roses were able to execute down the stretch and took a late 56-54 lead with just seconds remaining thanks to an Andrew Van Schaack basket in the paint. A miss at the other end by the Gulls was grabbed by guard Brandon Carroll who was immediately fouled and sent to the free throw line. …
