OK, so maybe it's not trending right now, but chances are, it soon will be. The New Jersey State Police ranked second among state police agencies nationally in terms of Twitter followers, according to statistics recently released by the IACP Center for Social Media. The agency has 23,618 followers, trailing only the Massachusetts State Police, which had a whopping 62,493 followers, as of April 30. The Texas Department of Public Safety (18,787), the Ohio State Highway Patrol (13,587) and the Indiana State Police (13,466) round out the top five. Driver apparently lost control traveling eastbound, ended up in westbound lanes, police said.
A 27-year-old Cranbury Township man died from injuries he suffered after being ejected from his motor vehicle in a 10:48 a.m. accident on I-195 at the Jackson/Howell Township border today. Carl Henninger was traveling eastbound in a Chevy Lumina when he apparently lost control, ran off the left side of the center median and struck another vehicle on the westbound side, State Police Spokesman Sgt. Adam Grossman said. Henninger was pronounced deceased at the scene, said Grossman. The driver of the vehicle struck by Henninger, Jennifer, Balka, 22, of Wall Township, was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune, with minor injuries, police said. Two New Jersey state troopers accused of leading a high-speed escort on the Garden State Parkway for a fleet of luxury cars have been criminally charged, the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office announced. The New Jersey State Police (NJSP) received complaints regarding the March 2012 caravan to Atlantic City, and the troopers were subsequently suspended without pay in April. In a press conference in Trenton on Friday, Attorney General Jeffrey S. Chiesa said the troopers who conducted the unauthorized escort "turned our highway into a virtual speedway." A convicted murder who police say has been in hiding for more than 15 years has been arrested in Florida. Detectives from the Fort Lauderdale Police Department arrested Robert Marone, 69, on Friday after receiving a citizen's tip relayed from the New Jersey State Police's Fugitive tipline, according to a release from the Office of the Attorney General. Marone, who was living under an alias in Fort Lauderdale, was wanted by the New Jersey Parole Board on a violation stemming from a 1971 murder conviction. In 1992, he was charged with aggravated sexual assault on a child in Ocean County and has been on New Jersey's 12 Most Wanted list since 1995. Season starts this week
It was less than a year ago that Hurricane Irene inflicted serious damage on the east coast of the United States. With hurricane season officially starting on Friday the state is taking steps to try and avoid a repeat of Irene in 2012. New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness Director Edward Dickson and New Jersey State Police Superintendent Colonel Rick Fuentes recently announced some of the changes being made. That includes an increase in communication to help residents prepare for emergency situations. With hurricane season running through Nov. 30 Dickson said hopefully with preparation New Jersey residents will be ready should a similar storm strike the state. Expected to last several hours
The New Jersey State Police will be conducting an investigation in the area of exit 31 of Route 195 on Friday. According to a message sent on their emergency text message system, the investigation should "extend into the afternoon hours." Ramps to the highway which were temporarily closed will remain open while the "ongoing investigation," continues the state police said. Motorists should expect to see State Police personnel walking near the roadway and are encouraged to proceed with caution to ensure their safety. The message from the state police said there is "no threat to public safety," as part of the investigation.

Chase started in Ewing, ended in Brick; Authorities say it was second pursuit in a day for suspect
After leading state police on an east-west pursuit across the state, a Delanco man was shot and wounded on a Brick Township street early Wednesday morning, authorities said. At about 12:30 a.m., state troopers tried to stop a white Nissan Pathfinder after observing a moving violation on Rt. 29 in the West Trenton section of Ewing Township, police said. The driver, later identified as Michael Zaun, 30, attempted to elude troopers and continued onto I-195 eastbound, eventually exiting the highway and ending up on local streets in Brick, according to a prepared statement from the state police. New Jersey residents are now able to receive critical information from state officials via text message, according to a release from the State Police. State Police and the Office of Emergency Management will be using an electronic service called Nixle Connect to deliver important and time sensitive information to state residents, the release says. The service, provided at no cost to taxpayers, allows verified government agencies to communicate with the public via text/SMS, email and internet posts, the release says. Coast Guard, State Troopers participating in national effort
Coast Guard members and New Jersey State Troopers will participate in a nationwide crackdown on drunk boating this weekend and step up their efforts to detect boaters operating vessels under the influence of drugs and alcohol. The two agencies will participate in Operation Dry Water, a national effort which runs June 24-26 this year. Authorities will be searching for boat operators whose blood alcohol content (BAC) exceeds the national limit of .08 percent, the same level of intoxication that can earn drivers a drunk driving charge on the road.
