New text message tip line opened in Monmouth County

If you see it, text it. The Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office today unveiled a new text message tip line, aimed at giving the public another avenue to help combat crime. Sheriff Shaun Golden at a conference today introduced MONTIPS, the agency’s newest text message tip line. Using the new system,  anyone from anywhere can anonymously text in a tip to the Sheriff’s Office using their cell phone, Golden said. Anyone with a tip on a crime or suspicious activity can text “MONTIPS’’ and their specific tip to “67283.’’ The tips are anonymous and the phone number it came from is encrypted. “Through this technology, we’re hopeful that people throughout Monmouth County will utilize and seize this opportunity, particularly young adults and teenagers…

Members of Monmouth County Law Enforcement Participate in Document Fraud Training

Attendees heard from the fraud inspector from the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission’s Document Fraud Unit.

Advanced technology has made it more difficult to detect fraudulent documents such as phony driver’s licenses, social security cards or green cards in recent years. In an effort to create awareness of the growing problem, the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office sponsored a Document Fraud Seminar at the Monmouth County Connection in Neptune Township. “Document fraud is a serious crime and can be a threat to public safety,” said Sheriff Shaun Golden. “Gaining insightful information at this type of seminar creates awareness and helps law enforcement spot a fraudulent document sooner, rather than later.” A document fraud inspector of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission’s Document Fraud Unit conducted the event, which was held on Wednesday, …

Man Charged with County Courthouse Bomb Threat

Bomb threat took place on Oct. 25 and caused courthouse to be evacuated.

The Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office has arrested and charged a man in connection with the Oct. 25 bomb threat against the Monmouth County Courthouse. Ellis W. Goodson, 35, allegedly made a 9-1-1 call on Thursday, Oct. 25 and warned that a bombing would take place at the courthouse that day. In a previous story, Patch had reported that a bomb threat against the courthouse came from a 9-1-1 call at about 12 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25. At that time, the courthouse was evacuated and area K-9 explosives-detecting dogs were brought in to sweep the building.  After the building sweep, no explosives were found, but due to the amount of time required for the investigation, the courthouse was closed for the rest of the day. Still Time to Prepare Before Hurricane Sandy Arrives

County urges residents to get ready before inclement weather

The brunt of Hurricane Sandy is not forecasted to affect the local area until late Sunday night into Monday morning. Before then, Monmouth County officials are asking residents to do all their preparation so they are ready for what figures to be extended periods of strong winds and heavy rain.  Getting prepared includes having things ready for people of all ages from children to senior citizens as well as making plans for pets if an evacuation becomes necessary. "We are asking all residents to take this weekend to prepare, plan and stay informed," said Freeholder Director John P. Curley. County PD Asks Residents to Participate in Online Natural Disaster Survey

Residents can now learn more about an all natural hazards-mitigation plan for the county

Monmouth County police are looking to residents to update the all-natural hazards plan through an online survey. The plan is funded through a grant program from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. It outlines natural hazards specific to the Monmouth County area and a plan to deal with each one. "The primary hazard in Monmouth County is flooding, but other potential hazards to be analyzed include drought, extreme cold, extreme heat, snow, ice, hail, windstorms Nor’Easters, hurricanes, tropical storms and tornadoes, among others," according to a county news release. Monmouth County Sheriff, Surrogate Named to State Posts

Rosemarie D. Peters and Shaun Golden named to Constitutional Officers Association of New Jersey

Monmouth County Surrogate Rosemarie D. Peters and Sheriff Shaun Golden have been named President and Vice President, respectively, of the Constitutional Officers Association of New Jersey(COANJ) according to a news release from the county.  Golden, a Howell resident, was elected sheriff in 2011 after replacing current Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno when she left for the post in Trenton. Peters is in her sixth year as surrogate and also has been named the Judiciary-Surrogate Liaison Committee for the New Jersey Supreme Court. She also served on the Middletown Township Committee as a committeewoman, deputy mayor and mayor.  Peters served as the vice president of the COANJ this year while Golden served as its secretary.  The membership of the …

Permanent Prescription Drug Drop-Off Comes to Freehold

The first permanent drug drop box in Monmouth County will be located in the lobby of the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office.

Monmouth County is taking a stand against prescription drug use with the first ever permanent drug drop box. Instead of Monmouth County residents waiting for their local municipalities to hold “operation take backs,” Freehold now has a permanent place for all Monmouth County residents to safely dispose of their unused medications. Applications Being Accepted for Monmouth County Citizen Police Academy

Applicants can not have a criminal record and be at least 18 years of age in order to apply for the Monmouth County Citizen Police Academy.

Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden announced applications are now being accepted for enrollment in the 16th Annual Citizen Police Academy. The Citizen Police Academy is a 12-hour block of instruction designed to give attendees an overview of law enforcement services in Monmouth County. The instruction features presentations by municipal, county, state and federal law enforcement agencies. The course consists of six sessions on consecutive Tuesday evenings, 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. at the Monmouth County Police Academy in Freehold. The course is also the prerequisite for becoming a member of the VISCOMP Volunteer Program.
