Belmar Mayor: Gov. Christie Will Help Us Reopen Boardwalk, Beach on May 22

Mayor announces governor will be joining in ribbon-cutting

The Belmar boardwalk and beachfront will officially open May 22 with much fanfare, to include a visit from the governor. One of the first towns to drive pilings for a new boardwalk, Belmar saw Gov. Chris Christie present to celebrate the beginning of construction, and local officials said the governor will return to celebrate the official reopening of the Belmar boardwalk. The ribbon-cutting on the beach and boardwalk will be held May 22, and Mayor Matt Doherty said this week Christie will be there. Christie and Doherty held a press conference with local officials for the public to kick-off the wide-scale rebuilding of the boardwalk this winter. The project began in January and the final boards were lain late April. May 22, the boardwalk …

Countdown to Memorial Day As Belmar Installs Boardwalk Railings, Bathrooms

Photo gallery of construction leading up to grand reopening

The signs along the Belmar beach and boardwalk still say "Closed," but not for much longer. Less than a week remains until the ribbon-cutting on the Belmar beach and boardwalk. This week, the beachfront bustled with final touches on the four beach playgrounds, striping along Ocean Avenue and installation of boardwalk railings.  Temporary trailers will be in place for concessions, and bathrooms. Though a lighting design is approved, if the project is not complete the use of alternative, temporary spotlights will be in place to light up the boardwalk, officials said. Here is a gallery of all the recent activity along the beachfront.

Belmar Boardwalk, Beach To Reopen May 22 With Ribbon-Cutting

Officials planning for much fanfare

The big day should be May 22, when a snip of a ribbon will mark the reopening of Belmar's boardwalk and beach. Hurricane Sandy destroyed so much of the oceanfront that Belmar's main tourist attraction has been closed since evacuation orders were issued before the storm. The long-awaited first day of access should be May 22, officials said Wednesday. Councilwoman Jennifer Nicolay announced the borough is planning a May 22 reopening date, with a special celebration to begin in the morning. "It's tentative, but by the end of the week we should have confirmed it," Nicolay said of the date. Details are now being finalized, but Nicolay said in addition to a ceremonial ribbon-cutting, the elementary students of Belmar and Saint Rose schools will …

Countdown to Memorial Day

Belmar's Boardwalk Is 'Spiced Rum'

Hue of boardwalk decking is in the brown color family

The first boards of "Spiced Rum" are down, with hundreds more to go. The liquor name is actually the color code of Belmar's boardwalk decking. With many colors of boards to choose from, the borough went with the brownish "Spiced Rum" color as it rebuilds its boardwalk after Hurricane Sandy. Late last week, the first boards were pounded onto the framework, and a real picture of what the finished Belmar boardwalk would look like began to take shape. It's only been about a month and two weeks since the groundbreaking of the Belmar boardwalk occurred, with a visit from Gov. Chris Christie Jan. 9 to celebrate the first piling. Mayor Matt Doherty said construction is progressing swiftly. The contractor, Epic Construction, has an April 30 …

What Will Rebuilt Belmar Boardwalk Look Like?

Borough releases plans, goes to bid

The Belmar boardwalk will see an upgrade to its ability to weather major storms, but otherwise the borough is planning to rebuild its major tourism destination very similar to its pre-Sandy look. Destroyed by Hurricane Sandy, the Belmar boardwalk will be rebuilt in a $20 million project that will use current codes — an upgrade from the 1970s-90s building codes when pilings were 12 feet. The new boardwalk will be built with 25 foot pilings and be banded underneath with hurricane straps, but will otherwise be the same length, width and height. Mayor and council said the plans were drafted nearly identically to the old boardwalk not just because FEMA reimburses projects that rebuild "as it was" but because they didn't want to tamper with …

Why We Serve Our Country

The following letter was wirtten by a member of the 101st Airborne to his two-year-old nephew. Three weeks later, the author was killed in the Battle of the Bulge.

This letter was submitted by Janet Hague, co-owner of Savory Spice Shop in Princeton.  Fred Buschhoff, of the 101st Airborne was 19 when he wrote this letter to his nephew, Dan Buschhoff (my father), for his second birthday. Three weeks after writing the letter, Fred Buschhoff was killed in the Battle of the Bulge.  France, January 5, 1945 Dear Danny, It won’t be long now until your second birthday rolls around, and much as I’d like to be with you, your Mother and your Father to help you celebrate, I’m afraid I won’t be able to make it. So, please, Danny, forgive me and accept my best wishes for a very, very happy birthday, and my sincerest hopes for many more like it, and a life of peace and freedom. You know, Dan, there’s a very good …

Belmar Boulevard Bridge Will Not Open For Memorial Day

County officials blame rain for delay of up to two weeks

The Belmar Boulevard bridge that has been closed since late last year will not open for Memorial Day weekend as expected, county officials said late Monday. An inordinate amount of rain over the past several weeks has put a damper on plans to have re-open the span that intersects with Route 35. The bridge has been closed since December, forcing detours through a residential neighborhood and out onto Route 138. "We've had an unusual amount of rain over the past three to four weeks and that has pushed this thing back,'' Monmouth County spokesman Bill Heine said. "We were hoping that this week would be the big push, but it looks like the weather isn't cooperating.'' Inclement weather has pushed back the opening for one to two weeks, Heine …

Belmar Holds Memorial Day Services

Belmar held two separate Memorial Day services on Monday morning as a way to honor the troops who continue to fight for our nation to this day.

Memorial Day weekend means many things to many people. For most, the weekend is the unofficial beginning of the summer, with trips to the beach, barbeques and a day off from work. However, it is crucial that people take time during this weekend to remember the troops who stand strong to protect our country. On Monday morning, the Borough of Belmar held two special Memorial Day services as a way to thank the troops for everything they do for us at home. The first service took place at 9:30 a.m. between 12th and 13th avenues on Main Street. At this location, there are statues commemorating those who fought in World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam War. Giving a speech during this service was Belmar Quarter Master Harold Cuddy, who fought …
