Governing body finds it 'really useful to hear directly' from pupils
The public portion of Thursday's Belmar Council meeting contained several requests from residents that the governing body has likely not heard all year. It probably had something to do with the fact that those residents were sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders. The list of requests from students of Belmar Elementary School, where once each year the governing body holds its regular meeting, included an arcade, ice skating rink, swimming pool and water park. While several items on the youngsters' wish list would most likely have to be fulfilled by private sector developers, a few, such as a walking bridge over Silver Lake, are actual possibilities, Mayor Matt Doherty said. "I thought they were really good ideas and suggestions," Doherty …

Reopened to traffic during overnight hours
Work is complete on the Route 71 bridge connecting downtown Belmar with Avon-By-The-Sea, officials said. The state Department of Transportation had closed the bridge during the overnight hours this week while crews worked to upgrade the bridge's safety barrier gates. But on Wednesday, Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty said he was informed the bridge was once again fully operational. The closures, which began Monday, were necessary for a manufacturer’s warranty upgrade on the new safety barrier gates, according to a DOT release. which will be performed at no-cost to the state, the release says. In 2011, the DOT completed a project to rehabilitate the mechanical and electrical systems on the bridge and installed new safety barrier gates, the …
New traffic lights, sidewalks being installed; street paving coming soon
Anyone taking a trip down Main Street in Belmar can see the downtown area has been undergoing a bit of a facelift of late. Sidewalks are getting dug up, new traffic lights are being installed and this week the bridge to Avon has been shut down during the overnight hours. But according to Mayor Matt Doherty, the downtown strip is going to be much easier on the eyes sooner rather than later. All but one of the four new traffic lights with countdown signals for pedestrians have been installed where Main Street intersects with Ninth, Tenth and 16th Avenues, Doherty said. And the final light, at 12th Avenue, should be up and running by the end of next week, he said. The torn-up sidewalks between Eighth Avenue and 16th Avenue -- the portin …

Fourth-annual 'Rock for Autism' benefit set for 5 p.m.
There is perhaps no better sign of the start of the summer season in Belmar as when D'Jais opens its doors for the first time of the year. And on Friday, May 4, the bar and cafe on Ocean Avenue plans to open up shop at 5 p.m. for the fourth-annual Rock for Autism, presented by the borough's First Aid Squad. For a $10 admission fee, guests will be privy to a free buffet and cash bar -- all in the name of supporting the Surfers Healing foundation for autism. Mayor Matt Doherty said he expects to be on-hand, and on Wednesday he encouraged his fellow governing body members to join the party. Tickets can be ordered by emailing fhines@belmarfirstaid.com
Expected to be up and running by mid-summer
The Belmar Planning Board on Tuesday unanimously approved an application from Chefs International, Inc., to build a miniature golf course and outdoor bar and restaurant on the Ninth Avenue Pier at the Marina, officials said. The Point Pleasant Beach-based company, which owns Jack Baker's Wharfside and Lobster Shanty, stepped in last month after plans between the borough and another developer for a $10 million project fell through. Robert Cooper, president and CEO of Chefs International, has said the proposed restaurant, being called "9th Ave. Pier," would be similar to the Patio Bar in Point Pleasant Beach, which the company also owns, offering "festival style" food, brick oven pizza, and a raw bar. Cooper, who pitched the project at a …

Barbara, I'm sorry that your in-laws lost all. A lot of people did, including my nephew and family, and a lot are still living in housing and motels. This has nothing to do with Belmar's accomplishments, or losses. Ride down the streets of Belmar, and you will see houses with the big red X and others still cleaning out. This isn't about the Governor, it's about people who had to go through red-…   more ›
