Letter to parents explains the process
The following letter was distributed to parents and guardians of Manasquan School District students last week: Dear Parent: The New Jersey Department of Education has moved towards a statewide teacher evaluation system. This initiative, Excellent Educators for New Jersey, grew out of the belief that high quality educators are the most important in-school factor affecting student achievement. The goal is to help schools develop a system that will provide meaningful feedback and actionable data to help all teachers continuously improve their practice. Last year a group of schools from across the state worked to design and implement a new teacher evaluation system. A second group will continue to pilot the program which has been modified …
Superintendent says monthly drills held in Manasquan schools help students, staff
The deadly school shooting at Newtown, Conn. is on the mind of Manasquan schools, as the superintendent offered condolences and explained how monthly drills would help students here. Manasquan's elementary and high schools conduct monthly drills that aim to prepare students and staff in the event of a similar event, said Manasquan Acting Superintendent Robert J. Mahon. The drills are mandated by the state, and include scenarios such as armed shooters, he said. "This is not a fire drill," he said. Instead specific drills address hazmat evacuation, bomb threats, armed intruders, lock downs and more. The specialty drill and a monthly fire drill lead students and staff to practice two drills monthly, he said. "We do have plans to safeguard …

Third-grade teacher accused of bullying; parents not satisfied with district's response
The disciplinary action taken by the Manasquan School District against a third-grade teacher accused of bullying was appropriate, according to the School Board. The unnamed female teacher was accused by parents of violating the school's HIB policy, and the subsequent investigation validated some of those claims, officials said on Tuesday. The parents, however, were not satisifed with the course of action taken by former Superintendent Geraldine Margin, and on Sept. 25 met with the board in closed session. The board on Tuesday reviewed the matter in another closed session and publicly determined that no further action would be taken regarding the matter. The board's attorney, R. Armen McComber, said the identities of the teacher and …

Former assistant coach Flaherty says athletic director tried 'micromanaging' girls hoops team
Manasquan High School's athletic director was not going to recommend girls varsity basketball coach Felix Romero to return next season, officials said.
