Unmoved by pleas for girls basketball assistant's reinstatement
Manasquan's School Board on Tuesday backed the high school athletic director's decision to release a volunteer girls basketball coach last month after it decided to take no action in the face of several appeals by community members to reverse the move. More than a half-dozen of Tom Flaherty's supporters and former players, including McDonald's All-American Michaela Mabrey, spoke during Tuesday's school board meeting and pled for the coach's reinstatement. The former high school girls varsity basketball assistant coach was released without an explanation last month by Athletic Director Ronald Kornegay. According to Flaherty's lawyer, Robert A. Honecker Jr., the coach was released Jan. 25 but not given an explanation until Feb. 21 after …

Clark's 28 points, Phipps' free-throw shooting carry Purple Roses to victory in rematch
Watching from the bench as Manasquan pulled to within a basket, St. Rose's Diana Malanga could do nothing but cheer on her teammates and keep her fingers crossed. St. Rose had led the entire game, pushing the tempo and keeping the Warriors on their heels, fighting to come back. It appeared Manasquan was about to make that comeback a reality, and the Roses' defensive leader was on the bench after fouling out. Her replacement, Catherine Phipps, wasn't about to let the victory slip away. And while Manasquan tested Phipps, fouling her on three straight trips down the floor, the freshman passed each test easily. Phipps hit six straight free throws to help St. Rose fend off the comeback in a 65-56 victory over Manasquan in the Shore Conference …

That caps a Cinderella run for the 10th-seeded Warriors who knocked off #2 ranked Lakewood at Sunday's quarterfinals and 7th-seeded Lacey last week. Warriors gearing up for Shore Conference Tournament
It was only two years ago that the Manasquan boys basketball team was in the Shore Conference Tournament semifinals with one of the top teams in Monmouth County, but current junior Jimmy Walsh is the only player left from the 2010-11 team that had any tournament experience, and he played only occasionally as a freshman. After a rebuilding year last season and an up-and-down start to this season, Walsh and Manasquan are starting to feel like winners again. Walsh scored 26 and grabbed 15 rebounds Saturday and led the Warriors past Holmdel, 67-58, for their third straight win and fourth in five games. Walsh also had five blocks. Holmdel entered the game on a two-game skid but the Hornets’ 13-4 record was one of the top marks in the Shore …

With the unbeaten Manasquan girls basketball team just a week from playing its most significant game of the regular season against also-undefeated St. Rose, the Warriors showed Saturday against Holmdel that they are not overlooking any opponent. Junior guard Katelynn Flaherty filled the stat sheet with 21 points, seven rebounds, six assists and six steals, and Manasquan’s defense did the rest in a 56-35 win over the Hornets. “We are definitely looking forward to St. Rose and the Shore Conference Tournament, but at the same time, we know we can’t take any team lightly,” Flaherty said. “Some of these teams may not be as good as St. Rose, but they are still good. Like today, (Holmdel) is a very good team and they battled us.” Flaherty not …

Manasquan Lady Warriors had four starters finish in double digits Tuesday night against the girls varsity squad from Wall High School, holding onto a commanding, 40-point lead through the last quarter to beat Wall 75-47. Freshman Marina Mabrey, sophomore Katelynn Flaherty and senior Michaela Mabrey each finished with 18 points to lead the lady Warriors, who remained undefeated after beating Wall on the Crimson Knights' court. Michaela Mabrey — the only starting senior on Manasquan (18-0) — added 11 rebounds as the only Warriors player to finish with a double-double. From the outset, the Warriors were looking to push the ball, jumping out to a 4-0 run in the first quarter, forcing the Knights to call a timeout. Manasquan used that gameplan …

Plenty of questions surrounding this team. Amazing how so many girls who neither lived or played in Manasquan prior to ninth grade ended up on this team all of a sudden.   more ›
