Third-grade teacher accused of bullying; parents not satisfied with district's response
The disciplinary action taken by the Manasquan School District against a third-grade teacher accused of bullying was appropriate, according to the School Board. The unnamed female teacher was accused by parents of violating the school's HIB policy, and the subsequent investigation validated some of those claims, officials said on Tuesday. The parents, however, were not satisifed with the course of action taken by former Superintendent Geraldine Margin, and on Sept. 25 met with the board in closed session. The board on Tuesday reviewed the matter in another closed session and publicly determined that no further action would be taken regarding the matter. The board's attorney, R. Armen McComber, said the identities of the teacher and …

Governing bodies meeting Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights
This week the Manasquan Borough Council, School Board and Belmar Borough Council are set to meet Tuesday and Wednesday nights, respectively, officials said. The Manasquan Borough Council and mayor are scheduled to begin their work session at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19, at Borough Hall, 401 East Main Street. The School Board is scheduled to meet 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, in the High School media room. The work session agenda includes a resolution to appoint Robert J. Mahon, the disctrict's acting superintendent, to interim superintendent retroactively effective Nov. 1. The board will also vote on a resolution to donate all proceeds from the Manasquan vs. Rumson high school football game -- more than $6000, officials say -- to local disaster …

Language softened regarding written requests, presidential approval of statements
The Manasquan School Board loosened up some of the language in its proposed changes to the board's media relations policy. The policy, adopted at the board's Sept. 25 meeting, calls for reporters, "whenever possible," to submit written and detailed requests via the district's website. The previous proposed version omitted "whenever possible." The superintendent of schools, "in consultation with the Board President," is named in the policy as the chief communications representative of the board concerning district-related questions. The previous version stated the superintendent's statements were subject to the board president's approval. Some board members and officials called into question the original proposals, first released at the …

Robert Schatzman downplays foundation's role in fundraising for proposed Warrior Athletic Complex
The president of the Manasquan High School Endowment and Alumni Foundation last week stopped by the Board of Education's regular meeting to help "clear the air" on what board officials have described as misinformation regarding the group's fundraising efforts for the proposed Warrior Athletic Complex. Robert Schatzman, the foundation's president, last Tuesday said that the foundation "has done little" to raise money for a proposed $2.9 million renovation of the high school's athletic complex. Board officials have previously said that the foundation was willing to pledge $300,000 for the project, but earlier this month it appeared that a dollar amount never was defined. Board President Michelle LaSala at last week's meeting said that the …

Effective Oct. 31; details of agreement not yet public pending state commissioner approval
The Manasquan Board of Education late Tuesday night accepted the resignation of Superintendent Geraldine Margin. The board School Board voted 10-1 with one abstention to accept Margin's letter of resignation and a separation agreement between both parties. The details, however, won't be released until the state commissioner of education approves the deal making it official. Margin, on administrative leave since early this month, will remain the district's official superintendent until Oct. 31, pending the commissioner's approval, according to the resolution (attached to the PDF section of this story). Board member John Winterstella cast the lone vote against the deal, while Newcomer Kenneth Clayton, as he did on all votes Tuesday, …

Proposed changes encourage written requests from reporters, board president approval of superintendent's statements
Mansquan School Board's president on Tuesday said officials would review proposed changes to the board's media relations policy after some members and officials voiced concern regarding certain language in the proposed policy. School Board Vice President John Winterstella at the board's Tuesday work session said that he disagreed with proposals from the Policy Committee to encourage, except in cases of "extreme emergency," reporters to submit written requests for information related to the district and board. Winterstella also took issue with a line that, as written in the draft, seemingly would require the superintendent to receive approval from the board president before releasing any statements. After some discussion, in which acting …

Officials say apparent $300,000 pledge from Alumni Association not a done deal
Manasquan School District's efforts to raise money for its $3 million proposed sports field project has been hampered by miscommunication and misinformation, officials said Tuesday. The Alumni Association endowment fund that district officials had believed was willing to commit nearly $300,000 to the four-phase project apparently had never committed a hard-dollar amount, according to information presented by School Board President Michelle LaSala at Tuesday's board meeting. On Friday, LaSala by telephone said that the endowment was waiting to receive clear direction from the board on which of the three plans proposed last summer it was supporting. "In all fairness, they've made great efforts, and on the board side of it, since the …

November candidate gets a head start after unanimous approval
Kenneth Clayton on Tuesday was appointed the newest member of the Manasquan School Board, filling an empty seat vacated by former President Christine Muly. The board voted 8-0 to appoint Clayton, of East Main Street, to the 12-member body. Thomas Bauer, Mark Furey and Julia Barnes were absent from Tuesday's work meeting. Clayton after the meeting said that as a board member he was looking forward to representing the taxpayers. While the appointment is the latest shuffle of a board that has seen four members resign since last school year, at least one more change is expected after November's election since Vice President John Winterstella is not running for reelection. Running unopposed, Thomas Pellegrino, of Cedar Avenue, is expected …

Kenneth Clayton likely will be confirmed newest School Board member
The Manasquan School Board on Tuesday is expected to vote on whether to appoint Kenneth Clayton, of East Main Street, to fill the board seat vacated earlier this summer by former President Christine Muly. Board President Michelle LaSala on Tuesday said that Clayton, who is running for a three-year term in November, was the only person to apply for the vacant seat. LaSala said she believes Clayton will receive unanimous support from the school board during the confirmation vote. ------------------------------------------------ Tuesday's meeting will be held at the High School media center at 7 p.m. ------------------------------------------------ "I think it's great that he's willing to give the board three years of his time (beginning …

Robert J. Mahon takes over for Geraldine Margin, on leave as of Tuesday
The Manasquan School Board on Tuesday unanimously confirmed Robert J. Mahon as acting superintendent of schools, hours after district staff were notified that former schools chief Geraldine Margin was going on administrative leave effective immediately. Mahon, the current mayor of Avon-By-The-Sea who also served as interm superintendent of the Spring Lake Heights school district through June, will earn a state-mandated fee of $605.77 per day as acting schools chief, officials said. The board called an emergency Tuesday meeting to push through the appointment in time for the new school year. Teachers began work earlier that day before students returned to classes today. Mahon is a former superintendent of Ocean Township schools and has …

Perhaps you weren't following along closely @Lonestar, the comments above suggest that a new Superintendent might not being too intertwined in the local political quagmires would be good. Somehow you interpreted this to mean board members shouldn't be local or have a history with the district. That is incorrect. Secondly, if you're a "taker" as you implied, shame on you. "Calling in a favor" to …   more ›
