Years of youtube videos show amiable surfing conditions
Surfing is a year-round activity near Manasquan, as surfers brave both wintery waves and summer crowds to ride the crests. But with Memorial Day approaching, we thought it a good time to celebrate surfing the Manasquan oceanfront. We've compiled this gallery of YouTube videos of surfers throughout the years. If it doesn't inspire you to grab your board, we don't know what will.
Less than one week until major tourist season
Planning a vacation or just a day trip? Patch has all the information on the Shore's best beaches
More than six months after Superstorm Sandy caused unprecedented damage to the Jersey Shore region, the beaches will be open for Memorial Day Weekend and the summer. While certain access points and facilities might be closed as municipalities continue to work on restoration, for the most part, the beaches will be operational. The only beach that remains off limits to the public is Mantoloking. The borough was home to a breach that split Ocean County's northern barrier island in half and was one of the hardest hit communities in New Jersey during the storm. So as you prepare to stick your toes in the sand, are you wondering what will be accessible after Sandy? Need to know how much it will cost to buy badges to your favorite beach? Curious …

Gee Gee's torn down, while Borough Beach Headquarters going up next door
Hurricane Sandy heavily damaged large portions of Manasquan's beachfront, and this week one of the most well-known businesses fell to the wrecking crew. Gee Gee's most damaged portion, its south side, was demolished this week. The northside is being prepared to reopen, selling pizza and other boardwalk food in time for the 2013 season. But the landmark business became a casualty to Hurricane Sandy and was torn into a pile of rubble this week. However, the signs of destruction that is Gee Gee's is being flanked by rebuilding to its north and south. While the building is renovating on the north side, the borough of Manasquan is rebuilding its beach headquarters directly to the south. The beach headquarters is quickly taking shape, with …

Home part of "This Old House" project
The long-established home improvement show "This Old House" on PBS has chosen several local houses damaged in Hurricane Sandy, undertaking projects there and airing the progress in a special series coming in October. But as work progresses on the homes, "This Old House" is posting live photos of the construction, and has compiled them into a time lapse on its website. One of the homes is a Manasquan prefabricated house, damaged by Hurricane Sandy. The home is seen as it was after the storm, then its demolition, and in May saw pilings for the house raising installed. As the project continues, a calendar of images will mark the progress. To scroll through the time lapse from post-storm to demolition to reconstruction, visit the website for …

Borough struggles against tourist assumption
While Manasquan works hard to rebuild its beachfront, it's downtown remains virtually unscathed -- a message Borough Administrator Joe DeIorio says needs repeating. "We need to get the message out that we are open," he said. As the borough resurfaces its asphalt beach walkway, sifts beach sands and secures damaged beachfront, stores along such places as Broad Street are its own destination that reopened as the power went back on after Hurricane Sandy. But that area struggles against assumptions that the whole borough is closed from the storm, DeIorio said. "Tell everyone: that is not the case," he said. The perception problem needs to be overcome to bring tourism back to both the downtown and the beachfront, he said. The borough plans to …
