Ocean Avenue reopens, Main Street closes
As thousands flock to the watch and parade in the Belmar-Lake Como St. Patrick's Day Parade today, expect traffic delays and road closures throughout Sunday. While the under-construction Ocean Avenue in Belmar has opened for the day, Main Street — the parade route — is closed. So is the road around Lake Como, Northern Boulevard, which serves as a staging area for bands, pipes and drums and other marchers. Be sure to budget extra time trying to navigate the Belmar, Lake Como area on parade day. Streetside parking is expected to be nearly impossible to find, and NJ Transit has added extra trains to accommodate demand along the rail line between Bay Head and Long Branch. Span over Shark River closed after Hurricane Sandy
The Route 71 bridge over the Shark River is now open. A detour that rerouted Route 71 traffic onto Route 35 in Belmar since Hurricane Sandy is over. State Department of Transportation officials announced the span between Belmar and Avon-by-the-Sea, at the north end of Main Street in Belmar reopened to vehicular traffic. Repair work after the storm is complete "days ahead of schedule," said NJDOT Commissioner James Simpson in a news release today. “We are pleased to get this bridge back in service ahead of schedule because we understand its importance to residents, business owners and visitors," said NJDOT Commissioner James Simpson. Partnership makes calculated, incremental changes downtown
A year into Belmar’s experiment with its Special Improvement District, the managing organization’s executive director last week highlighted the program's accomplishments and future vision of the downtown business district. The Belmar Business Partnership, according to Executive Director Michael Redpath, has improved the overall management, branding and marketing, development and aesthetic appeal of the borough’s downtown businesses. Redpath presented the partnership’s 2011 accomplishments and 2012 plan to the Borough Council and mayor at their Nov. 30 workshop meeting. The partnership, tapped to execute the borough’s SID and restore the downtown commercial center, has implemented several — yet relatively frugal — changes to not only the …
Water, sewer and storm drain work along Main Street, Seventh and Eighth Avenues
Belmar is undergoing a $660,000 infrastructure project to replace water, sewer and storm drain lines underneath a section of Main Street and other connecting roads. Funded by a combination of borough cash and a zero-interest state loan, the project is currently under way as crews work to upgrade and install key infrastructure below Main Street and Eighth and Seventh avenues, Borough Administrator Robbin Kirk said. The majority of the project, $449,000, is being financed through the state Infrastructure Trust Loan program at zero percent interest to the borough, she said. The project aims to upgrade the water main on Main Street that runs from Eighth Avenue to Seventh Avenue to a 12-inch line from an 8-inch line while also replacing the …

County-funded project replacing five traffic signals on southern drag of Main Street
New traffic signals are currently being installed along a stretch of Main Street in Belmar. Funded by a grant received by Monmouth County, the new traffic signals will be compliant with the latest Americans with Disabilities Act standards, and include a numbered countdown in order to be more “pedestrian friendly,” Belmar Mayor Matthew J. Doherty said. The county will replace the five traffic signals along Main Street between 16th Avenue and Ninth Avenue, Doherty said. That portion of the road is a county road, while Main Street from Eighth Avenue north – also known as Route 71 -- falls under state jurisdiction, he said. The borough expects to apply to the state to replace the three traffic signals on their portion of Main Street, Doherty …
