Authorities have not yet released identity of resident
A fire broke out at a Long Branch home early Monday morning, killing a 79-year-old woman inside. The fire was reported at 2:56 a.m. at 11 Howland Ave., and was extinguished in the next few hours. Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office Public Information Officer Charles Webster said an autopsy will be performed on the woman today to determine her cause of death. Webster said the identity of the woman has not yet been released, as the next of kin has not been notified. Webster said the cause and origin of the fire have also not yet been released. He said a firefighter suffered a minor injury while battling the blaze, but refused medical treatment. Oakhurst boy was pronounced dead at 1:34 p.m.
The 12-year-old Oakhurst boy whose sand tunnel collapsed on him on Tuesday afternoon has died at Monmouth Medical Center. Long Branch Police Capt. Jason Roebuck confirmed the boy was pronounced dead at 1:34 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. His name has not been released at this time. The boy was apparently digging a large tunnel under the sand on the beach near the Great Lawn shortly after 3 p.m. when it collapsed on him. The boy was with his mother and 10-year-old brother, who tried to dig him out with the help of lifeguards. Lifeguards performed CPR until an ambulance took him to Monmouth Medical Center, where he was placed in pediatric intensive care overnight. Boy remains in pediatric intensive care unit at Monmouth Medical Center
A large hole collapsed on a young boy who was digging in the sand in Long Branch on Tuesday afternoon, and a fire truck responding to the scene hit a pedestrian who was holding his toddler. All three victims have been taken to area hospitals for their injuries, according to Long Branch Police Capt. Jason Roebuck. Roebuck said the 12-year-old boy was digging in the sand and that CPR was performed on him by lifeguards as soon as he was pulled out of the hole. He said the boy was rushed to Monmouth Medical Center for treatment and that police are still investigating the incident. I'm sitting here reading this as I'm on family vacation at the beach. How absolutely horrific. Honestly in this situation it is no one's "fault". Every single parent has taken their eyes off their school age child at some point. Any of those times could have resulted in a tragic life altering accident. Preventable or not. Accident.
