A Taste of 'Local Summer' While Fishing

Variety of species at Barnegat Inlet make for season's most pleasant day

For Shore year-rounders, the next several weeks are what we like to call "local summer." The weather will remain warm, the ocean water will hover at a perfect swimming temperature and the fish will still be biting – but the crowds will have left for not-so-greener pastures inland. The "local summer" concept isn't your average slam on the "bennies" or "shoebies." It's a (short) breath of fresh, warm air just for locals, who can enjoy their hometowns unscathed for a little while before the cool breezes and gray skies of fall and winter arrive. This week, my father and I got a rare taste of local summer before Labor Day. On Wednesday, we fished Barnegat Inlet and the channel nearest the Coast Guard station with a hint of fall in the air and …

Labor Day Weekend Marks End of Summer Season at the Shore

Tourists and locals enjoyed their last few days before heading back to their yearly routines

A week after Hurricane Irene ripped through the Jersey Shore, local municipalities put themselves back together in time to see large crowds come out for one more taste of summer on the Jersey Shore this Labor Day Weekend. Politicians including Governor Chris Christie and Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno, Congressman Frank Pallone and a number of local mayors and council members put out the call urging beachgoers to come back for one more weekend before the Jersey Shore tourist season concluded. Many heeded the call. John Walsh of Succcasunna has been enjoying spending the summer at his second residence on 17th Avenue in Belmar with his family. As the summer ends, he is sad but is ready to get back into the upcoming fall sports season. Like many, …

Labor Day Weekend's Best Nightlife

A look at the best in Jersey Shore nightlife for the weekend of Sept. 2 to Sept. 5

The weekend that marks the near end of summer's heat is here, but we've still got some time to soak up that warm air and enjoy the local treatment on our shores. Below are some of the most sought-out destinations for the long Labor Day weekend. One of the biggest and wildest shore clubs, Bar A has a wide spread of sand bars, cabanas, tiki bars, and club floors. It is the place to be all summer long. Named after a park in Dublin, this enchanting pub and Irish restaurant is one of the most authentic in the state. There are daily menu specials and weekend live entertainment. Parker House, First Ave & Beacon Blvd, Sea Girt Operating in their 134th summer, The Parker House is nothing short of a shore institution. This historic spot attracts …

Officials: Jersey Shore is Ready for Labor Day

Mayors, legislators announce the beaches are ready after Hurricane Irene

A collection of mayors and council members from coastal municipalities along with 11th District Assemblyman Dave Rible and Congressman Frank Pallone gathered at the Belmar Boardwalk on Friday afternoon to announce that the beaches are open and that the Jersey Shore is ready for Labor Day Weekend. A week earlier, many of the same leaders met on the Belmar boardwalk to emphasize the dangers of Hurricane Irene as it approached New Jersey and to urge people to stay away. Governor Chris Christie, speaking from Trenton last week, even went so far as to tell residents to "get the hell off the beach in Asbury Park." In the wake of the storm, local municipalities have worked double-time to prepare themselves for Labor Day Weekend, the symbolic end …

Dirty Bay Could Curtail Labor Day Fluke Bite

How will anglers do a week after Hurricane Irene

First off, we hope everyone's boat made it through the storm alright. Personally, I left my 19-footer in the water, tied down with about 8 lines, and took all of the other necessary precautions (removing canvas, cleaning out scuppers, etc.) and fortunately, Hurricane Irene spared us the prolonged hurricane-force winds that had been forecast earlier in the week. I took a couple of rides out on the boat this week and, unfortunately, the bay is not looking great for fishing. The water is still rather muddy looking, and there's lots of eelgrass, planks of wood and other various forms of flotsam floating out there. Bottom fishing for fluke is going to be rough over the next few days, and the forecast makes it look like we'll only be able to …

Rible: Spring Lake is Open for Business

Assemblyman encourages shoppers and diners to visit

11th Legislative District Assemblyman Dave Rible visited Spring Lake's downtown business district on Wednesday, encouraging residents and tourists alike to support the shops and restaurants in the borough. Spring Lake was among towns that sustained significant damage at the hands of Hurricane Irene. The beachfront boardwalk was decimated and many area streets saw rampant flooding as both the Spring Lake and Wreck Pond swelled with storm water. JCP&L has worked to restore power to the borough and most, if not all, of the businesses in the borough's scenic downtown are now open for business. Assemblyman Rible has released the following statement: “Spring Lake is a beautiful town and while it was affected by Hurricane Irene, the beach and …

I'm glad the beautiful shore town made it through the storm. Good luck to all who have damage and hope for speedy repairs. The boardwalk, while "green" was not attractive, Maybe a new, more realistic-looking "green" product is available to replace the damaged areas.   more ›
