Officials: Jersey Shore is Ready for Labor Day

Mayors, legislators announce the beaches are ready after Hurricane Irene

A collection of mayors and council members from coastal municipalities along with 11th District Assemblyman Dave Rible and Congressman Frank Pallone gathered at the Belmar Boardwalk on Friday afternoon to announce that the beaches are open and that the Jersey Shore is ready for Labor Day Weekend. A week earlier, many of the same leaders met on the Belmar boardwalk to emphasize the dangers of Hurricane Irene as it approached New Jersey and to urge people to stay away. Governor Chris Christie, speaking from Trenton last week, even went so far as to tell residents to "get the hell off the beach in Asbury Park." In the wake of the storm, local municipalities have worked double-time to prepare themselves for Labor Day Weekend, the symbolic end …

L Street River Beach Closed in Belmar

Precautionary measures taken after manholes overflow

The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection is reporting that the river beach at L Street in Belmar has been closed. In a bulletin posted on NJBeaches.org, the DEP explains that overflowing manholes as a result of Hurricane Irene are the reason for the precautionary closing. The DEP is currently testing water samples from the area and expects to have results later today or tomorrow. The River Road section of Route 35 along the Shark River was hit especially hard during Hurricane Irene this weekend. The Belmar Police Department and the Monmouth County Sheriff's Office blocked off a large portion of the road to traffic in both directions as a heavy storm surge overtook the road between Route 71 and 16th Avenue. L Street beach is a …

Shore Businesses Re-open After Hurricane Irene

Several eateries and establishments back in business despite flooding and power outages

It was “business as usual” – sort of – in many coastal towns the Monday following Hurricane Irene, as numerous businesses were open, yet many remained closed due to power outages. Several businesses were still “shuttered” Monday afternoon – mainly due to power outages – and there was little foot traffic along Main Street in Belmar, yet the boards were alive, and people were on the beach. Still not open however, was Casa Vittoria Pizzeria on Ocean Avenue. “We never lost electricity. Last night (Sunday), we were totally fine. The town pumped out a lot of Silver Lake in anticipation of the storm. Sometime between last night and this morning, the water level rose. We moved everything to higher ground,” said owner Nick Fuccilli, Belmar. “We …

Guadagno: 'Get the Hell Back on the Beach'

Lieutenant governor takes tour of Shore to promote Labor Day tourism after hurricane

"Get the hell back on the beach." Those were the words Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno jokingly gave to the people of New Jersey while taking a tour of the Jersey Shore on Monday. Days after Gov. Chris Christie told sunbathers to "get the hell off the beach in Asbury Park" as Hurricane Irene barreled up the coast toward the Jersey Shore, his second in command made stops along the state's coast to survey the damage caused by the storm and to encourage tourism this Labor Day Weekend. Belmar was one of a four-stop helicopter tour of the Jersey Shore which included Atlantic City, Point Pleasant Beach and Asbury Park. "We're open for business," she said emphatically. Guadagno met with mayors Michael Ryan of Lake Como and Matt Doherty of Belmar and …

UPDATED STORY: Divers Find Second Body in Lower Level of Manasquan Inlet Rock Jetty

Second man found may have been friend of first man found this morning

Divers found two bodies on the Point Beach side of the Manasquan Inlet rock jetty, according to one of the divers of the Point Pleasant First Aid and Emergency Squad. Milton Rodriguez, one of five divers who searched for the bodies Sunday and Monday, said he found the second body early Monday afternoon in the lower crevices of the rock jetty in Point Beach, near where the first victim had been found. Rodriguez said police had spotted the first body on Monday morning, also in the lower levels of crevices in the rock jetty, and then the dive team recovered him. The man was wearing only underwear. The second victim, who police and the divers had originally been searching for, was found stuck between two rocks, 96 feet from the first victim, …

After Hurricane Irene, Water Quality Worries Arise

Stormwater from inland could degrade ocean water quality

As New Jersey begins to reassemble itself after Hurricane Irene's weekend of destruction, concerns have been raised over the quality of ocean water. On August 26, one day before the effects of Hurricane Irene began along the Jersey Shore, New Jersey Department of Environmental Commissioner Bob Martin signed an order closing shellfish beds statewide. "This predicted precipitation, high winds and storm surge will likely result in significant flooding, power outages, sewage bypasses and sanitary sewer overflows resulting in degraded water quality," the order read. One such sewerage spill has already been reported in Monmouth County. According to the DEP run website NJBeaches.org, a sewer line dumped into Wesley Lake, between Asbury Park and …

Surveying Hurricane Irene's Damage

After storm devastates area, officials take stock

The lights are still out for some as people throughout the area begin to survey the damage left in the wake of Hurricane Irene. Fallen tree limbs, flooded streets and a ravaged beachfront were common sights in southeastern Monmouth County following New Jersey's closest run-in with a hurricane in nearly 100 years. In Manasquan, flooded roadways along the borough's waterfront impaired an effort to extinguish a two-alarm blaze in a home on Brielle Road. With roads impassable by fire truck, the borough had prepared by equipping their high-wheel OEM vehicles with water pumps and fire extinguishers, Manasquan OEM Coordinator Dave Kircher reported. The firefighters pumped floodwater to fight the flames until they could successfully hook up …
