Week One With Hurricane Sandy in Brick

What the first devestating week looked like from my Mantoloking Road vantage point

It’s been a week since Hurricane Sandy hit and like many others, we still have no electricity at my house off Mantoloking Road. Our neighborhood is humming with the sound of generators, but I’ve been worried about the silent households ever since the temperatures dropped. In the past week, I (like you) have seen a lot, starting with a house strewn in the middle of Gale Road. A homeowner there said it washed across the bay and through the marsh onto his low lying street—a street that still reeked of diesel fuel on Thursday. Homeowners were shoveling thick, smelly muck from their driveways like it was snow that day. They thanked me for stopping and listening, even though that’s all I did. My brother-in-law lost most of his belongings in a …

Wall Woman Killed In Route 34 Collision

Accident occurred hours after power to the traffic light was turned on

A Wall Township woman was killed Saturday afternoon in a collision at the intersection of Route 34 and Belmar Boulevard, police said. The collision occurred around 1 p.m. when Andre Volk, 44, of Freehold, driving northbound on Route 34 in a 2005 Ford F-250 pick-up, hit the  2000 Mercedes Benz driven by Gina M. Nobes, 55, of Wall, police said. Nobes was ejected from the vehicle during collision. She was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune Township, where she was pronounced dead. Wall Township First Aid, Wall Township EMS and MONOC responded to the scene, and the state highway was shut down around the intersection for about two hours, Sgt. Chad Clark said. The intersection was among only a handful that were powered…

Gas Lines Stretching Into Parkway

Long lines for one of the only gas stations around still open

Gas, groceries and other necessities are in short supply these days, with businesses throughout the area without power and the few that are open have queues hours long. The station at the Garden State Parkway reststop in Wall is one of the few open. Wednesday morning, the line to fill up stretched a mile into the Parkway northbound lanes. Two hours, Dave Kumpkin, of Jackson, said he had waited to fill up his work van. In that time, he had just barely moved off the Parkway lane and into the rest area. He was still a long way from a pump. "I'm on 'E' now,'' Kumpkin said. "I don't know if I'm going to make it.'' The only other nearby gas station with power Wednesday morning was in Neptune Township, on Old Corlies Ave and Route 33. Lines there…
