Warrior Challenge Coming to Avon

Event will raise funds to support families of Special Forces

It's not every day that an Army Black Hawk helicopter lands on the beach in Avon-by-the-Sea. Then again, it's not every day that The Warrior Challenge comes to town. On Saturday, July 16, hundreds of athletes will descend up the sand in Avon for the Third Annual Warrior Challenge, a fitness event that will benefit the families of servicemen injured in the line of duty. The event consists of four separate challenges. First, competitors will be tasked with a one-mile deep sand run while carrying a 40-pound sand bag. Next is a maximum pull-up challenge begun from a dead hang position with no jumping or kipping allowed. Then the competitors will be challenged to complete as many burpees as they can in a two-minute period. For the uninitiated, …

Over 250 Swimmers Brave Atlantic for Jack Wright Mile Swim

The annual Jack Wright Mile Swim was held in Bradley Beach

On a Saturday morning with not a cloud in the sky, over 250 individuals donning wet suits and swimming caps braved the water and took part in the annual Jack Wright Ocean Mile Swim in Bradley Beach. This event, which kicked off at 9:30 a.m., was named after Jack Wright. He was a patrolman in the Bradley Beach Police Department who was killed while attempting to foil a robbery attempt back in 1976. The swim began at the Kent Avenue beachfront and concluded after the third jetty on the beach, located near the 2nd Ave beach. Bradley Beach Chief Lifeguard and Beach Manager Dick Johnson said this was one of his favorite events of the year, and he is always amazed by the turnout from the local community for this event. “This is always an …

What To Do When the Ocean Goes Flat

Activities to keep you sane during downtime

Every now and again, I'll email our editor Tom Dunphy about what he would like to read from me next. This morning, I asked him just that and his response was, "Write about what to do when the waves go flat." He followed it with a "Haha." I also laughed. July is coming which usually results in flatness and intense heat, due to the Bermuda High that generally situates itself over our coast. After my initial, "that's a good one," my mind began to wander and this actually became a great subject to write about. Explain some of the activity's that keep me in surfing shape while I'm not surfing all the while keeping the cobwebs off from not actually surfing. I figured since surfers are the standard as far as physical fitness, I would share my …

Training Elite Athletes with a Jersey Shore Ethos

How performance coach Todd Durkin uses hometown lessons to lead elite athletes to victory

The first time I met superstar performance coach Todd Durkin he was on his bike, slinging a newspaper across my family’s front lawn. Then his sister and I married a couple of Bricktown brothers and we became family. Last week, for the second time in two years, one of Durkin’s clients led a team to victory in the Super Bowl. In an interview with Yahoo! Sports this week, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers talked about what a tough and effective trainer Durkin is. In the forward to Durkin’s new book, The Impact! Body Plan, last year’s winning quarterback Drew Brees credits the trainer with helping him grasp the elusive trophy. While Durkin expresses gratitude to these and other professional athletes for helping to make him a success…
