WED. UPDATE: Boat Had Mechanical Failure Before Hitting Jetty

No injuries when Ocean One Hit Point Beach Jetty at Manasquan Inlet

The Ocean One commercial fishing vessel had a mechanical failure that caused loss of power that led it to collide into the rock jetty on the Point Pleasant Beach side of the Manasquan Inlet, the Coast Guard said on Wednesday afternoon. The scallop boat was coming back into the inlet when it lost power and the shoal that has developed along the jetty since Sandy had nothing to do with the incident, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Dan Wishnoff. Three people were safely rescued from a commercial scalloping vessel that drifted onto the rock jetty on the Point Pleasant Beach side of the Manasquan Inlet on Tuesday night, according to the Coast Guard. There were no injuries among the three, whose names were not yet available, said Joseph Hartline…

Hurricane Sandy

STORM: Snow Brings New Outages For Some

Others have had no power at all for 10 days

Gov. Christie told a gathering on Long Beach Island on Wednesday that the coming Nor'easter and anticipated snowfall would likely cause "a setback" in the work underway for full power restoration. Boy, he wasn't kidding. JCP&L, on its website, is acknowledging that the nor'easter has created new outages, often for customers who were hit with outages in the height of Sandy's destructive path, had power restored and are now in the cold darkness yet again. "Late Wednesday, heavy, wet snow and high winds from the nor'easter resulted in approximately 120,000 additional power outages in the Jersey Central Power & Light service territory," says the JCP&L website. The company serves 13 counties in New Jersey, including Monmouth and Ocean. There …

I-195 Bridge Damage Prompts Lane Closure

The lane closure is expected to last up to six weeks.

Editor's Note: The following is a news release issued by the New Jersey Department of Transportation. NJDOT Commissioner James Simpson announced on Wednesday night that westbound traffic on a heavily traveled Interstate 195 overpass over the New Jersey Turnpike in Mercer County will be restricted to one lane for up to six weeks. The normal complement of two eastbound travel lanes across the overpass will be maintained. The overpass sustained damage earlier today when a truck crashed and became engulfed in flames beneath the overpass. To ensure the safety of motorists, NJDOT will prohibit travel on one of the two westbound lanes provided by the overpass. A new I-195 overpass that is being built in connection with the widening of the …

Wall Man Who Jumped Off Point Boro Bridge Charged

He was charged with disorderly conduct and swimming in the canal

A Wall man who jumped off the Route 88 bridge has been charged with swimming in the canal and disorderly conduct, police said Monday. Devon R. Kuehnen, 34, of the Allenwood section of Wall, suffered only a minor laceration to his nose after jumping from the bridge late Friday night and setting off a massive manhunt that lasted more than two hours, police said. Police, divers, first aid and fire department volunteers searched the canal and surrounding areas before finding Kuehnen safe on a canal bank early Saturday morning, police said. He was charged and released on a summons. Swimming in the canal is prohibited by borough ordinance. A bridge tender called the police at 11:48 p.m. Friday, saying a man had jumped from the bridge, prompting …

House Fire Knocked Down in Belmar

Officials believe lightning likely culprit; no injuries reported

A small house fire in Belmar likely caused by a lightning strike was quickly knocked down Wednesday afternoon, officials said.  Trucks from every company in the Belmar Fire Department, and one from neighboring West Belmar in Wall, were on the scene around 2:30 p.m. in the 200 block of Eighth Avenue, where Belmar Fire Chief Nick Lorusso said the small fire was knocked down in about 15 minutes with no injuries to civilians or firefighters reported.  Lorusso said the fire, which he described more of a "smoldering," was likely caused by a lightning strike and burnt holes in the roof of the three-story residence.  The home's occupants evacuated the house and were outside when crews arrived, Lorusso said.  Firefighters detected smoldering …

Point Boro Girl Rescued from Manasquan Inlet Fall

12-year-old slipped on jetty, taken to hospital with minor leg injury

A Point Pleasant Borough girl who slipped and fell Sunday while playing on the Manasquan Inlet jetty in Manasquan suffered no serious injuries, police said Monday.  The 12-year-old fell in between the jetty rocks shortly after 7 p.m. and was pulled out by a human chain of police, fire and first-aid officials, Manasquan Police Chief Elliott Correia said.  In accordance with standard procedure, she was carried off the jetty to safety in a litter (or rescue basket), Correia said.  The girl complained of a leg injury and was transported by ambulance to a hospital Sunday night, Correia said. The injury did not appear serious, he added.  Authorities did not release the girl's name.

Anatomy Of A Tragedy: Central Avenue Fire

Benefit for a family who lost everything is this weekend

It was a pretty good day. Bonnie Glab’s shift at the New Horizons in Autism group home where she works as a teacher and aide started at the usual time, 3 p.m. on April 18, 2012. It was her first day back from vacation and a couple of hours later, all indications still pointed to a reasonably calm, uneventful shift. Things were going pretty well, Glab said. And so by 5:40 p.m., she was at a nearby convenience store when her cell phone rang. It was a neighbor – a woman who lives across the street from the yellow bungalow Glab has called home for the last 22 years. Things weren’t going so well. “She said: ‘You need to come home right now, your house is on fire,’’’ Glab said. * * * * * Jacqueline Garcia lives at 1914 Central Ave., across the …

Benefit For West Belmar House Fire Victims

Glab family's home was gutted by accidental fire

It will take a lifetime to replace what the flames took only a few minutes to destroy last week in the yellow West Belmar bungalow that the Glab family called home. The fire at 1913 Central Avenue was reported late afternoon April 18 and was under control in about 15 mintues, officials have said. In those minutes, all the worldly possessions of Bonnie Carroll Glab and her 16-year-old son, Brock, were destroyed. The fire was ruled accidental. Brock, a Wall High School sophomore who was home at the time of the fire, received burns that require treatment at St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston. Treatment will take an estimated 18 months, according to a family friend. A benefit is being held at The Headliner in Neptune City on June 10th from 3…

Fire Guts Spring Lake Heights Townhouse

Elderly woman rescued by construction workers

An elderly Spring Lake Heights woman Tuesday afternoon was carried to safety by construction workers after her townhouse caught fire and was almost completely destroyed, authorities said.  Emergency crews responded to the call at 3:21 p.m. at The Commons townhouses on Monmouth Avenue, where a fire quickly ripped through a two-story home, leaving an 86-year-old woman's home in ruins and minor damages to a neighboring dwelling, Spring Lake Heights Fire Chief Casey Willms and police at the scene said.  The first crews on scene knocked down the fire within 10 minutes, but the aggressive blaze destroyed most of the home, Willms said.  A construction crew working nearby spotted the fire in the rear of the townhouse, alerted the woman and helped …

Local Power Outages After Brush Fire

Damage to JCP&L substation causes nearly 1000 outages

A brush fire along Memorial Drive in Bradley Beach Monday afternoon damaged a Jersey Central Power & Light substation along that road, causing power outages for nearly 1000 customers in the borough and neighboring Neptune, a JCP&L spokeswoman said. The outages occurred at 12:19 p.m. but power was restored about an hour later to all but 79 of the 852 customers affected, Roberta Sheridan said. The company expects power to be restored to all area customers later Monday afternoon, Sheridan said. Calls to Bradley Beach Fire Chief J.D. Everett were not immediately returned. According to emergency communications, the fire seemed to start in the 800 block of Main Street, which eventually took out the substation on Memorial Drive. Patch will …
