World's Best Short Films at Algonquin Saturday

Classic shorts and international festival winners showcasing comedy, drama and animation

“World’s Best Short Films” returns 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, to Algonquin Arts Theatre in Manasquan with a brand new lineup, officials said. The event, New York City’s longest-running exhibition of award-winning short films, will be hosted by Sea Girt resident Diane Raver, founder of the Garden State Film Festival, according to a theater spokesman. The fast-paced program features the best in comedy, drama and animation by combining classic shorts with international festival winners, David Applegate said in a release. “A rare opportunity to see world-class films on the big screen in a theatrical setting,” Applegate said. Point Beach Council Turns Down Snooki and JWoww

Council may consider charging for film permits

The Point Beach Council agreed unanimously on Tuesday night to not allow MTV to film the "Snooki and Jwoww" reality show on public property in town. Through the brief discussion about the MTV request for a permit to start shooting the two "stars" going out to local night spots, starting Thursday, Mayor Vincent Barrella said perhaps the council should think about charging for film permits. They are now free, said Point Beach Business Administrator Chris Riehl. He noted that the town charges the American Cancer Society to conduct a fundraiser on the boardwalk annually. "And yet, MTV would get a free pass," Barrella noted, adding the council should think about developing a fee for film permits. That prompted mention of the town's special …

Algonquin Theatre's 'Cinema Under the Stars' Returns Monday

Academy Award-winning, family films top this summer's list of weekly showings

Cinema Under the Stars, Algonquin Arts Theatre’s free outdoor movie theatre, returns with four titles beginning Monday, July 23, with Academy Award-winner “Hugo," a theater spokesman said.  The series continues July 30 with the Disney animated classic “Lady & The Tramp” and August 6 with “The Muppets” (2011), according to a theater release. The final film of the summer, “Mary Poppins” starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, is scheduled for August 13, the release says. Each movie will be projected on the Algonquin Arts Theatre flytower in Old Squan Plaza, Abe Voorhees Drive, at 8 p.m., the release says. RE:IMAGE Film Festival Slated for Manasquan Sunday

Diocese of Trenton’s third annual festival at Algonquin ARTS Theatre to feature several local filmmakers

The Diocese of Trenton's Third Annual RE:IMAGE Film Festival is set to kick off Sunday, May 6, at the Algonquin ARTS Theatre on Main Street in Manasquan, according to a release.  Several local filmmakers, including 13 students from various parishes in Monmouth and Ocean Counties, will screen 20 short works and additional exhibitional pieces themed after forgiveness, the celebration of life, and overcoming adversity, a release from the diocese says.  The festival will be preceded by an 11 a.m. commencement Mass at St. Denis Church, 90 Union Avenue, in the borough.
