New Type of Wind Energy System to be Tested in Brick

Turbine Advantage of Manasquan will install two vertical-axis turbines in the township for a one-year test

A new form of clean energy production will be tested in Brick Township. The township council approved a resolution allowing a one-year test of a new type of wind turbine that was recommended by a mayoral council on alternative energy. The Mayor's Advisory Committee on Renewable Energy began hearing testimony last summer from Turbine Advantage, LLC, a company based in Manasquan that specializes in vertical axis, or "egg beater," wind turbines. Advocates for wind energy say vertical access wind turbines are smaller and more efficient than their better-known counterparts, such as the gigantic turbines that can be found in offshore wind farms. Its true that the energy generated by the smaller unit would probably be used up just from the appliances that use electricity even when they are turned off, but like Chris said its still a positive. The only possible issue I can see, which will be determined during the testing period, is if there is an average wind speed of 10mph, which the website states is needed for peak energy generation.   more ›
