400 Still Without Power in Brielle

Union Lane accident causes power outage

A car hit a pole on Union Lane, Brielle, at about 10:17 a.m. Wed., causing a power failure, according to Gerry Ricciardi, JCP&L area manager. The nearest cross Street is Brielle Avenue.  At 2 p.m., 427 customers still without power in Brielle, but no nearby towns have reported outages according to the utility company. "We hope to pick up the majority of customers within the next hour and the remainder by 4:30 p.m.," he said.

Brielle Hydrant Flushing Through April 26

Borough undergoing spring hydrant flush

A regularly scheduled spring hydrant flush is underway through April 26 in Brielle. The borough announced it will flush hydrants, which could create a disruption of water pressure and discoloration, though water is safe to drink. The hydrant flushing is scheduled for late evening hours. The process began April 21 and should last through April 26. For questions, call borough department of public works at (732) 528-6600.

Route 35 Bridge Testing Finished

Bridge between Point Beach and Brielle to remain passable

  You'll be able to keep crossing the Route 35 bridge when you come to it. It's been passable since mid-afternoon Wednesday and it looks like it will stay that way. The state says the testing on the bridge is finished, which is good news for those who sat in traffic Wednesday as the bridge was intermittently in the raised position. Contractor crews left the bridge shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday and will not need to return. Contractors for the state Department of Transportation (DOT) were testing the locking mechanisms on the bridge, they ran two or three tests and they were just fine, said DOT spokesman Timothy Greeley on Thursday. Brielle Issues Voluntary Evacuation for Low-Lying Areas

Police warn residents of 8 foot water, 40 mph winds

Brielle residents in low-lying areas should voluntarily evacuate, borough police announced this morning. Emergency personnel announced a 3 p.m. high tide and 4 a.m. Thursday tide could create tides about 8 feet above normal. Winds are expected to gust as high as 60 mph, the borough announced.  Residents should secure property, clear streets of vehicles, and, if in a low-lying area, a voluntary evacuation is urged. Owners of Bogan's Deep Sea Fishing Center Sentenced for Tax Evasion

William H. Bogan Sr. to spend six months in prison

The owners of Bogan's Deep Sea Fishing Center in Brielle were sentenced today after pleading guilty to income tax evasion in March. William H. Bogan Sr., 77 was sentenced to six months in prison and six months home confinement with electronic monitoring. His daughter, Sharon Bogan, 47 was sentenced to two years probation. The Bogans, owners of several charter fishing boats and river cruising boats located in Brielle and Point Pleasant Beach, failed to report large portions of income earned for five years, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office. From 2004 through 2009, the Bogans kept for their personal use a large portion of the business receipts received by their charter fishing and river cruising boats – primarily payments in the form …

Glimmer Glass Bridge Closing for Upgrades

County project on Fisk Ave. bridge expected to last two weeks

The Glimmer Glass bridge between Manasquan and Brielle will be closed for roughly two weeks beginning Monday, Oct. 1, officials said.  Required safety system upgrades funded by the county will shutter the bridge along Fisk Avenue for about two weeks, weather permitting, according to a county release.  The county will close the roadway so the contractor, IEW Construction Group, can replace two traffic gates and one barrier gate the release says.  “Monmouth County prides itself on safety, especially with its movable bridges,” said Freeholder Deputy Director Thomas A. A Brick man who allegedly fled from police and jumped into the Manasquan River on Sunday is scheduled to appear in Brielle municipal court today at 1 p.m., documents show.  John B. Benedetto, 46, faces one count of third-degree eluding after, authorities say, he fled from the scene on foot and jumped into the Manasquan River after being approached by borough police investigating reports he was soliciting for a charity, documents show and officials have said.  Benedetto was aprehended by the marine division of the State Police just after 9 p.m. Sunday, authorities have said. Union Beach Man Indicted on Brielle Burglary

A Union Beach man was indicted by a county grand jury last week on charges he burglarized a Brielle home in May, documents show.  Brian Bornemann Jr., 34, of Second Street, faces charges in Superior Court stemming from an alleged May 30 burglary of a Brielle residence belonging to a homeowner listed only as "D.D.," the indictment says.  The indictment was signed by acting county Prosecutor Christopher J. Gramiccioni.

Newark Man Arrested With Alleged Stolen Handgun in Brielle

A Newark man was arrested Thursday in Brielle and charged with illegal possession of a stolen handgun, documents show.  Maurice Howard, 20, of Peshine Avenue, is scheduled to make his initial appearance in Monmouth County Superior Court Friday facing charges of second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun and third-degree possession of stolen property, the criminal complaint says.  Howard was picked up by Brielle Police with a Kimber Custom II .45 caliber semi-automatic handgun fully loaded with eight rounds, the complaint says.  Howard also is alleged to have known the gun was, or might have been, stolen, the complaint says.  Both alleged charges are indictable offenses, the complaint says.  Howard's bail was set at $50,000 with no ten-…
