UPDATE: State Investigating Brown Water Off Monmouth Beaches

Flyover on Thursday found no evidence of algae bloom, DEP says

Because of reports of greenish brown, dirty-looking water at the beaches around Asbury Park, Avon and Bradley Beach, the state Department of Environmental Protection is looking into the water quality off Shore Area beaches, according to its website. The Monmouth County Health Department has identified a variety of species of dinoflagellates -- planktonic plants -- in the waters at the those beaches. These microscopic plants are generally not toxic to humans but in very heavy concentrations may be toxic to fish and shellfish because they remove oxygen from the water, according to the DEP. Additional samples are being collected by the DEP's Bureau of Marine Water Monitoring and at the beaches by the Monmouth County Health Department, …

Bronx Men Charged Using Counterfeit Bills Also Accused of Drug Possession

Police found marijuana hidden in car ceiling during last week's Bradley Beach arrest

Two Bronx men who were arrested last week in Bradley Beach for their part in an alleged shopping spree using fake $100 bills have also been charged with drug possession, documents show.  Marcus A. Maldonado and Jason C. Castillo, charged last week along with a third alleged accomplice for spending several counterfeit bills at borough establishments, were also found to be in possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana after police searched their automobile, according to additional criminal complaints.  During a search of their car, police say they found a green, leafy substance believed to be marijuana in the ceiling panel above the driver's side.  The two men, along with Phillip Peters Jr., made their initial appearances in Superior …

Bronx Trio Charged With Using Phony $100 Bills

Allegedly used fake notes at several Bradley Beach establishments

Three Bronx, N.Y., men are due to appear in court Thursday facing several charges of forgery and theft for allegedly using fake $100 bills at several Bradley Beach establishments last week, documents show.  Jason C. Castillo, 25, Marcus A. Maldonado, 20, and Phillip Peters Jr., 24, were arrested July 18 by Bradley Beach police after, authorities allege, they knowingly used phony notes at six different restaurants and a liquor store in the borough.  The three men allegedly conspired together to purchase cheap items at each location, taking back nearly $400 in change from the transactions.   Employees at two of the establishments spotted the counterfeit bills, the criminal complaint says.  Police say the the trio deprived Ferraro's Pizza of…

Bradley Woman Indicted on Child Endangerment

Charges allege abuse or neglect of a 4-year-old

A Bradley Beach woman was indicted last week on charges of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, documents show.  Joanne Ventresco, 54 of LaReine Avenue, was indicted July 18 by a Freehold grand jury on charges she allegedly abused and/or neglected a 4-year-old under her care last spring in West Long Branch, the indictment says.  Ventresco faces one count of second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, the indictment says.  Ventresco, the indictment says, committed the alleged crime while having a legal duty or assumed responsibility for the unnamed child. Jailed Man Faces More Burglary Charges In Wall

Bradley Beach man faces new charges on burglary of Ramshorn Drive home

A Bradley Beach man already jailed on burglary charges from three Monmouth  County towns faced new charges on Wednesday in a break-in of a Wall home, according to police records. Michael C. Hanisch, jailed last month after being caught red-handed stealing from an Aberdeen Township home, was additionally charged with another burglary in Wall, according to arrest records. Hanisch was charged with breaking into a Ramshorn Drive home on April 24 and taking a flat-screen television worth about $3,000, according to the arrest warrant. It brings to 15 the number of charges against Hanisch in connection with a spree of residential break-ins throughout Monmouth County. Bradley Beach Hikes its Badge Prices

Badges are required beginning Memorial Day weekend

A popular location on the shore, Bradley Beach can trace its roots back to the 1600s. Like most towns there are seasonal as well as daily badges available: $70 adults; $30 seniors (62 and older); $25 juniors (ages 14-15); Free for children 13 and younger; $8 daily pass.  Beach badges are required on weekends beginning Memorial Day weekend; daily starting June 20 through Labor Day. Badges are on sale at town hall, located at 701 Main St. and booth locations. They can only be purchased with cash or check, and there are no mail transactions. Checks should be made payable to the Borough of Bradley Beach.  Lifeguard hours: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekends starting May 25 through June 16 including holidays. Bronx Man Charged with Forging I.D. to Steal Cash

Allegedly used fake drivers license, credit card to withdraw $500 from Bradley Beach Chase Bank

A Bronx, N.Y., man was indicted by a Freehold grand jury last week on charges he used fake documents to steal $500 from a Bradley Beach bank, documents show.  Anthony Rodriguez, 33, faces four counts in Superior Court stemming from a January incident in which authorities allege he used a fake driver's license and credit card to withdraw cash belonging to a victim named only as "H.W." from Chase Bank in the borough, the indictment says.  Three other Bronx men also were charged with obstructing the administration of law during the investigation, the indictment says.  Rodriguez is charged with theft by deception, uttering a simulated document, possession of a simulated document, and uttering a forged instrument, the indictment signed May 3 by…

Bradley Beach Woman Charged With Child Neglect, Assault

Allegedly broke two-year-old's arm while under her care

A Bradley Beach woman made her initial appearance in Superior Court Friday after she was arrested last week for allegedly breaking the arm of a 35-month-old child under her care, documents show.  Nicole D. Davis, 30, of Ocean Park Avenue, faces charges of child endangerment and aggravated assault stemming from an April 25 incident in which the toddler allegedly suffered a spiral arm fracture.  Her bail was set at $75,000 with no 10 percent option, the complaint says.  Davis will appear before Judge James E. Berube Jr. in Freehold.

Local Power Outages After Brush Fire

Damage to JCP&L substation causes nearly 1000 outages

A brush fire along Memorial Drive in Bradley Beach Monday afternoon damaged a Jersey Central Power & Light substation along that road, causing power outages for nearly 1000 customers in the borough and neighboring Neptune, a JCP&L spokeswoman said. The outages occurred at 12:19 p.m. but power was restored about an hour later to all but 79 of the 852 customers affected, Roberta Sheridan said. The company expects power to be restored to all area customers later Monday afternoon, Sheridan said. Calls to Bradley Beach Fire Chief J.D. Everett were not immediately returned. Morning Fire In Bradley Beach Home Extinguished

Second fire this week in town

A fire that started in a wall in an oceanfront home in Bradley Beach was extinguished this morning — the second fire this week in the small seaside town. Fire departments from Bradley Beach were assisted by crews from Avon, Neptune, Asbury Park and Belmar in the 800 block of Ocean Avenue around 11:30 a.m., according to Bradley Beach Fire Capt. John McLoughlin. One resident was inside the home at the time of the fire. There were no injuries, McLoughlin said. The fire started in a wall of the home, McLoughlin said. Crews were able to extinguish the blaze before it reached the roof of the structure. No other homes were involved, McLoughlin said. Crews were on scene for about an hour. The fire was the second this week in Bradley Beach.
