Ex-Manasquan Girls Hoops Coach Explains Resignation

Romero says long commute, no teaching offer led to decision

Former Manasquan High School girls basketball coach Felix Romero on Tuesday said he resigned earlier this week after it became apparent that a teaching job at the school he had hoped to land would never come to fruition.  Romero resigned over the weekend, but before he could submit his official letter of resignation and contact his team, school officials posted the coaching position on a state school jobs website, he said.  After the media caught wind of the apparent vacancy, and the coach's phone began ringing off the hook, Romero said he couldn't lie about his plans to leave.  Romero said the decision was tough, but the commute from his home in Perth Amboy was taking its toll on him and his family.  "So with the travel, the driving, the …

School Board Mulls Recording Meetings

Audio files would be available on district website

The Manasquan School Board next week is expected to vote on changing its bi-laws to allow audio recordings of its meetings to be posted online.  At the board's Tuesday work session, President Michelle LaSala said that posting full audio recordings of each meeting could help lighten the load on Board Secretary Margaret "Peg" Hom, also the districts's business administrator, from fulfilling Open Public Records Act requests for meeting minutes.  Officials said that Hom spends a great deal of her time handling OPRA requests for minutes, which she also has the responsibility of typing up, and perhaps providing the public with the audio would alleviate some of her workload.  The minutes themselves, officials said, have become so detailed that …

Manasquan Uses State Aid to Lower Tax Levy

School budget now maintains flat tax rate, meets state-mandated minimum tax levy

The Manasquan Board of Education voted unanimously to make changes to its 2011-12 school year budget which will result in a zero tax increase for this year and will lower district spending to the state-mandated minimum tax levy during an emergency action meeting held Monday evening. The meeting was convened in the wake of an announcement last week by Gov. Chris Christie that the state would pump an additional $600 million in state aid into New Jersey public schools. District Business Administrator Margaret Hom explained that the district would now receive state aid totaling $455,646. With a mandated debt service payment of $19,753, the district will see total aid amounting to $435,893 for the 2011-12 school year. The new figures nearly …

Manasquan Schools' Surplus Draws Criticism

Some wary of more than $1 million in leftover funds

What some would consider a windfall for the the local school district drew the ire of some Manasquan residents during a special action meeting of the Manasquan Board of Education on Tuesday evening. The topic of discussion was what should be done with more than $1 million in surplus the Manasquan school system has left from its 2010-11 budget and further, how the district ended up with such a surplus in the first place. The meeting was called by board President Christine Muly to disclose budget information brought up by Superintendent Geraldine Margin during a closed session at the body's last meeting earlier this month. According to the Open Public Meetings Act, all discussion of budgets must be done publicly. The surplus total, $1,104,…

It is clearly an derelection of offical duty for a BA and Superintendent to NOT clearly emphasize a surpluss of this magnitude from the elected officials. It is also clearly an indication of a poor budget development process. The administration did not justify evert proposed expenditure during the budget process...rather than use true zero based budgeting practices, they just increased budget …   more ›

Manasquan Voters Pass Budget

One incumbent, two newcomers win seats on Board of Education

Voters in Manasquan have passed the school budget by a margin of 692 to 523. Members of the Board of Education and school administration gathered at the district's Broad Street offices on Wednesday night, eagerly awaiting results from the borough's four polling districts. "We won!" was shouted amid claps and cheers when the final votes were tallied. The budget question was approved in District 1, 2 and 3, but failed to pass in District 4— which covers the beachfront area and much of the borough north of Main Street and east of Route 71. "We really want to thank the community members of Manasquan for supporting our schools and affirming that they think we're doing a good job," Superintendent Geraldine Margin said shortly after the results …
