Celebrate Black History Month Through Monmouth County Events

The Monmouth County Library and The Court Street School is presenting moving presentations for Black History Month.

Black History Month is celebrated in the U.S. throughout the month of February. American historian Carter G. Woodson established Black History Week to commemorate the contributions that people of African descent have made to our nation. The first celebration occurred on Feb. 12, 1926. For many years, the second week of February was set aside for the celebration to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and abolitionist and editor Frederick Douglass. In 1976, as part of the nation’s bicentennial, the week was expanded into Black History Month. Each year, U.S. presidents declare February National African-American History Month. Celebrating Black History Month: Local Events

Head to your local library or community center for events honoring African-American heritage.

Local libraries and other venues have scheduled a host of events celebrating and honoring African-American history and culture in recognition of Black History Month. Check out these offerings in southern Monmouth County. Smokey Robinson Tribute Concert: In honor of Black History Month, The Bradley Beach Public Library is hosting an educational/cultural music program: "The Legacy and Music of Smokey Robinson," about one of the primary figures associated with Motown. This performance will take place on Thursday, Feb. 23, at 6 p.m.  Celebrate Black History Month at Barnes & Noble: On Feb. 21 at 4 p.m. Barnes & Noble of Howell (Lanes Mill Marketplace, Hwy 9) will have a special children's event.
