Photo gallery of construction leading up to grand reopening
The signs along the Belmar beach and boardwalk still say "Closed," but not for much longer. Less than a week remains until the ribbon-cutting on the Belmar beach and boardwalk. This week, the beachfront bustled with final touches on the four beach playgrounds, striping along Ocean Avenue and installation of boardwalk railings. Temporary trailers will be in place for concessions, and bathrooms. Though a lighting design is approved, if the project is not complete the use of alternative, temporary spotlights will be in place to light up the boardwalk, officials said. Here is a gallery of all the recent activity along the beachfront.

Borough extended its deadline for donations
Belmar has extended its "Buy a Board" campaign to May 15. The original deadline was April 30, but Mayor Matt Doherty announced recently that the borough would be accepting donations through Wednesday, May 15. "Buy a Board" is a fundraiser that will put names on boardwalk entrances and funds in the boardwalk rebuilding coffers. The "Buy a Board" campaign allows donors to give money to the borough, specifically to buy the actual boards that make up the boardwalk, and have their name displayed at beach entrances. The borough set a deadline in order to have enough time to write out all the names of the donors. Belmar's boardwalk was destroyed in the surge of Hurricane Sandy, and the borough is using grants, bonds, FEMA reimbursement, to offset…

Celebration to be held at former Taylor Pavilion
Belmar continues to plan for a grand re-opening of its beach and boardwalk, May 22. The final boards are lain and railings are now going up. Concession trailers and bathrooms will be installed for the season until permanent facilities go up in 2014, Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty said. The permanent lighting may not be installed in time, leaving the borough to go with temporary spotlights or another fix, said the mayor, but otherwise the boardwalk and beach will function in time for the grand re-opening. The re-opening is being planned with much fanfare, said the mayor. The elementary students of Belmar and Saint Rose schools will be invited, and the Belmar Strong volunteers will be honored. There are plans for special presentations, t-shirts …

Original deadline was April 30
Procrastinators hoping to have their name displayed on the rebuilt Belmar boardwalk can rejoice: the borough has extended its "Buy a Board" campaign to May 15. Epic Construction's bonus is $100,000
April 26, the Belmar boardwalk was considered "substantially complete" less than five months after Epic Construction drove the first piling into the Hurricane-Sandy ravaged beachfront. For getting the work done before April 30, the Piscataway contractor earned a bonus written into the project contract: $100,000. Mayor Matt Doherty and council presented Epic Construction workers with a ceremonial check at last night's council meeting, reading a resolution commending their work. Belmar maintains it was the first to start and complete its boardwalk after Hurricane Sandy destroyed so many beachfronts along the Jersey Shore. Epic Construction and the borough were aggressive in getting the work done, Doherty said, noting the first piling kicked …

Liability an issue, mayor says
As the weather warms more people will take to Belmar's beach, but they can't walk the boardwalk to get to the sand, officials said. Police have been shooing pedestrians from the boardwalk, residents reported, and Mayor Matt Doherty said it's because there's an insurance issue that the boardwalk has yet to install railings. Without railings, the boardwalk remains off-limits due to the liability, he said. The entire length of the Belmar boardwalk was rebuilt after Hurricane Sandy, first driving pilings starting Jan. 9 until today's nearly complete boardwalk. The boardwalk itself lines the beachfront but railings, benches, landscaping and lighting has yet to be installed. The boardwalk may prove tempting to walk on, but signs and cones …

The last date, Mayor Matt Doherty said, will be April 30. Donations range from $25 to more than $5,000. The total amount raised is more than $550,000. More blocks opening now that boardwalk work progressing
Belmar plans to open Ocean Avenue up to 17th Avenue, on Friday, removing barriers from another portion of the oceanfront road packed with construction since Hurricane Sandy. But now that construction has progressed south of 17th Avenue, vehicular access will be restored to the road, Mayor Matt Doherty said. Now, vehicles can drive up to 10th Avenue before facing a detour. Another 7 blocks are expected to open Friday. Boardwalk construction crews' lumber and equipment closed Ocean Avenue much of this year, as the borough worked to rebuild the boardwalk destroyed by Hurricane Sandy. But the boardwalk north of 10th is now all lain, and the road and some parking was opened up as work was complete.

First through 10th now open after Hurricane Sandy boardwalk construction is complete
Concrete barriers and detour signs are becoming fewer in Belmar. More of Ocean Avenue is now open: you can now drive 1st through 10th avenues. The additional blocks of the roadway opened Tuesday. Mayor Matt Doherty said last week that Ocean Avenue access was planned, to open five more blocks to traffic in about seven days. For several weeks, vehicles have been able to drive from 1st to 5th, but then faced a detour as the beachfront road was closed south of 5th due to the ongoing construction. Now, drivers can travel as far south as 5th before meeting a new detour west. Ocean Avenue was closed since an October evacuation, then through much of March for construction along the Hurricane Sandy ravaged beachfront. Construction crews began …
