Police: Pedestrians Struck, Disorderly Persons Arrests, But Belmar Parade Generally 'Family-Friendly'

Evening patrols will be looking for drunken driving

Policing an influx of an estimated 90,000 visitors to Belmar on parade day did not go without incident for Belmar Police, who had made four arrests by evening and responded to pedestrians struck. Belmar Police Chief Thomas Palmisano said two pedestrians were struck by a vehicle at Route 71 and 16th Avenue in Belmar, requiring transport to Jersey Shore Medical Center before 10 p.m. Sunday. The police chief said the two pedestrians were conscious, but one had a reported head injury. First responders remained on the scene after 10:30 p.m. as traffic continued to slow. Manasquan Police Down One After Officer Transfers to Belmar

Police academy classes for a new hire would come after August

Manasquan has one fewer police officer after a transfer was approved for one employee to Belmar. Patrolman John Mahoney will join the Belmar Police Department after Manasquan Borough Council approved his resignation. The departure was under good circumstances, as another opportunity presented itself, officials said. The Manasquan Public Safety Committee, which addresses policing issues and reports to the borough council, will be discussing the matter of how to fill the vacancy and the timeline ahead, given the police academy calendar and time needed to identify and test new recruits. With discussion of the Manasquan Police Chief Elliott Correia, public safety committee reported that the borough could see the vacancy last past August. …

How Does Crime in Manasquan and Belmar Compare to Neighboring Towns?

NJ Spotlight has created an interactive map of 2011 crime rates in New Jersey.

With many towns along the Jersey Shore small in size, how do the crime rates of Manasquan and Belmar compare to places only a few miles away? NJ Spotlight has created an interactive map using the recently released 2011 Uniform Crime Report that plots the total crime rate per 1,000 people for seven index crimes (four violent -- murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault -- and three non-violent -- burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft). In Belmar, the overall crime rate per 1,000 residents was 58.5 for 2010 and 51.3 for 2011. When considering violent incidents per 1,000 residents, the crime rate was 4.1 for 2010 and 3.5 for 2011. Convicted Sex Offender Arrested for Violating Parole

James Darby, 35, didn't report to parole officer or live at approved residence, authorities say

A convicted sex offender residing near Belmar was arrested Tuesday after authorities say he skipped parole and failed to report his address. James Darby, 35, who the county lists as homeless with a last known address in Lake Como, failed to notify law enforcement of an address change, as all convicted sex offenders in the state are required, the complaint says.  Darby's parole officer on Sept. 7 filed a complaint with Belmar police accusing him of not showing up for a scheduled parole meeting, not living at a pre-approved address, and illegally possessing and using narcotics, the complaint says.  Darby also failed to enroll and participate in any form of substance abuse counseling, the officer said.  Belmar police on Sept. 7 had Darby's …

Slew of Arrests Close Out Belmar Summer

Borough police charge 15 with improper behavior in two weeks

Belmar police closed out the final two weeks of the summer season with more than a dozen arrests for improper behavior, authorities said.  Borough police during the last week of August and first week of September charged 15 individuals with improper behavior and other offenses, according to a department release.  Some of the accused individuals were from Belmar and other local towns, while several others were from northern New Jersey and elsewhere, the release says. One Belmar resident was arrested twice during the same two-week period.  Most of the arrests took place in the south end of town, according to the release.  Belmar police between Aug. 27 and Sept. 9 made the following arrests for improper behavior:

Drunken Driving Arrests in Belmar

Borough closes last week of tourism season with several arrests

The final week of the summer tourism season was a busy one for Belmar police, as authorities reported several arrests including two for drunken driving.  Police during the final week of August charged two men, including one Belmar resident, with DWI, according to a release from the Belmar Police Department.  Overall, between Aug. 27 and Sept. 9, borough police made 35 arrests, the release says. Improper behavior was the most common charge, according to the release. Police during that two week time period charged the following individuals with DWI:

Belmar Man Charged with Sex Crime

Scheduled to make first court appearance Wednesday

A Belmar man charged by borough police last week with a sex crime is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday, documents show.  Antelmo Evans-Rosales, 26, of 14th Avenue, was arrested Saturday for allegedly committing criminal sexual contact on a female victim the previous day, the criminal complaint says.  Evans-Rosales is charged with making sexual contact with the woman, not named in the complaint, "for the purpose of sexually arousing or sexually gratifying himself, or to humilate or degrade the victim," according to the complaint. The complaint says Evans-Rosales lifted up the victim's skirt, pulled down her underwear and put "his penis on her buttocks." Belmar Police Arrest Three on Drug Charges

Borough resident arrested for third time this month

Belmar police last month arrested three individuals in separate incidents on alleged drug charges, including heroin possession, authorities said.  During the second-half of August, borough police charged two Belmar residents and one Newark man with possession of various drugs and paraphernalia, according to a release from Belmar police.  One of the Belmar residents, Kareem Abou-Gharbia, 31, was picked up by police for the third time this month, and fourth time since July 11, records show.  In his latest arrest, Abou-Gharbia was arrested Aug. 22 at the Belmar train station and charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. Belmar Man Arrested Twice in As Many Days

Charged with making terroristic threats, harassment, drug possession

A Belmar man last was arrested twice in as many days and faces drug and weapons charges, authorities said.  Police arrested Kareem Abou-Gharbia, 31, on Aug. 4 in the 200 block of Eighth Avenue and charged him with harassment and possession of marijuana and paraphernalia, according to a release from the Belmar Police Department.  Abou-Gharbia was arrested the following day, Aug. 5, at Ninth Avenue and Main Street and charged with making terroristic threats and unlawful possession of a weapon, the release says.  Special Officer Christopher Ingliss made the Aug. 4 arrest, and Officer Michael Yee and Special Officer Michael Rzigalinski made the Aug. 5 arrest, the release says.  Abu-Gharbia was also arrested July 11 in the 600 block of Main …

Multiple Drug Arrests in Belmar

Cocaine, marijuana possession among charges

Belmar police made several drug-related arrests during the first half of August, authorities said.  A few locals and several out-of-towners have been charged with drug possession and other offenses, according to a release from the Belmar Police Department.
