Borough paid for repairs with bond, expecting FEMA reimbursement
Time to grab a putter or simply go for a jaunt: Belmar Marina's 9th Avenue Pier and its mini-golf course have reopened. Monday was the first day of operation, with 11 a.m. being the first tee time for the season at the mini-golf course. Though some additional work needs to be done at the marina, the 9th Avenue Pier is now open, in a week expected to have temperatures regularly reaching the mid50s and sunny. The Monday reopening marks another open facility shuttered for months by Hurricane Sandy. Though the mini-golf course is normally closed for winter, this winter saw the marina pier undergo renovations after Hurricane Sandy. The 9th Avenue Pier bar is closed currently, but could open this weekend after completing a borough inspection of …

New tiki bar and restaurant at marina set for 4 p.m. opening
Belmar's newest — and only — tiki bar at the marina is scheduled to open up shop at 4 p.m. today. The 9th Ave. Pier, owned and operated by Chefs International, Inc., will be similar to the Patio Bar in Point Pleasant Beach, which the company also owns, offering "festival style" food, brick oven pizza and a raw bar, according to Robert Cooper, the company's president and CEO. The Point Pleasant Beach-based company, which also owns Jack Baker's Lobster Shanty and Wharfside in that town, stepped in last spring after a $10 million major redevelopment deal fell through between Belmar and international developer Hibernian that would have seen the construction of a tiki bar, golf course and two-story twin commercial structures at the marina. …

Mayor hopeful deal with redeveloper for two-story commercial building will be signed by end of January
Belmar officials are hoping to begin talks with a potential redeveloper that wants to construct a two-story commercial building at the Ninth Avenue pier in the Marina, Mayor Matthew Doherty said. At last week’s Borough Council work session, Doherty said the borough had received one bid for the redevelopment project but since the proposal was not complete the borough’s redevelopment attorney advised them to officially reject it. However, Doherty said, the borough plans to still pursue that company anyway and begin preliminary talks before negotiating the estimated $5.5 million commercial project. If all goes to plan, the current building at the pier, Fisherman’s Den Bait & Tackle, would be demolished and a two-story structure built in its…

Frankly Belmar's attempts at redevelopment don't stand a chance -- without a solid dose of reality. Belmar isn't a truly "family friendly" destination -- until walking and bicycling are made safe and convenient. Together, Bicycling and walking bring in the green -- positive environmental impact coupled with solid economic growth. In short: build it (a bike-walk friendly community), and they will …   more ›
Construction of new bulkhead and boat ramp scheduled for June 2012 completion
Work has begun on a $2 million marina project in Belmar that will replace the bulkhead and construct a new boat ramp at the docks just off Route 35. The state Department of Environmental Protection coastal engineering project is being funded by a combination of federal, state and municipal dollars, Belmar’s Borough Administrator Robbin Kirk said. The $1,950,135 project includes the removal of the current bulkhead along the Belmar Marina and then constructing a new one, some minor dredging and the construction of a new double-wide boat ramp, she said. Belmar has contributed $790,279 to the project, but was reimbursed $261,954 by a state grant, bringing the borough’s total cost down to $528,325, Kirk said. The bidding and construction of the…
Mayor Matt Doherty said he first learned of the privatization vote from a report on Patch
Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty asked the Board of Chosen Freeholders to keep municipalities informed about the process of privatizing the county’s movable bridge operations. The board voted on Nov. 9 to unanimously approve a $1.485 million one-year contract with Florida-based Drawbridge Services, Inc. The contract was subsequently assigned to Drawbridge Services, Inc.’s newly-formed affiliate, East Coast Drawbridge Corporation. Doherty addressed the freeholder board during its regular meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at the Hall of Records building, explaining that he first learned of the privatization effort from a report on Patch. “I am an advocate for privatization of services where it makes sense. My concern on behalf of my residents and, in …
