The Belmar Borough Council and mayor held this week's meeting at Belmar Elementary School on Thursday at 1:30 p.m., and Patch was there providing live updates. Mayor Matt Doherty said the governing body moved their regular meeting from Wednesday at Borough Hall to the school in order to give its students a first-hand look at the workings of local government and let them know that they, too, have a voice in the community.
Mayor, council and other volunteers cleaning up town parks and streets
Belmar's mayor and Borough Council are inviting volunteers to join them "makeover" the borough's parks and streets Saturday, May 19, beginning at 9 a.m., officials said. Mayor Matt Doherty is asking volunteers to meet on the steps of Belmar Elementary School on Main Street between Tenth and 11th Avenues, rain or shine, at 9 a.m. sharp. The town-wide cleanup is expected to last until noon. Department of Public Works (DPW) Superintendent Mike Campbell will provide volunteers with all the supplies needed, including bags and gloves. Volunteers will be assigned to locations at Maclearie Park, Silver Lake, E Street Park and individual streets. Partcipants are being advised to wear clothes suitable for working outdoors. Parents of children with disabilities invited to Belmar Public Library
The American with Disabilities Act (ADA) Committee of Belmar is hosting a meeting for Belmar parents of children, teens and young adults with disabilities on Thursday, May 24, at 7 p.m. at the Belmar Public Library, at the corner of Tenth Avenue and E Street. Committee members want to extend support, and learn how they can better serve the area's youngsters who are disabled, physically and intellectually challenged included, Borough Council President Claire Deicke said. Mayor hopes to give students afternoon look at their local government
The Belmar Borough Council and mayor will hold this week's meeting at Belmar Elementary School on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Mayor Matt Doherty said the governing body moved their regular meeting from Wednesday at Borough Hall to the school in order to give its students a first-hand look at the workings of local government and let them know that they, too, have a voice in the community. Arrested with another woman in Neptune
A Belmar woman was indicted in Superior Court this week on charges of cocaine possession, documents show. Sara N. Accardo, 39, was arrested last December in Neptune and charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance, the indictment says. Accardo's last known address was listed as being on 17th Avenue, the indictment says. Accardo was arrested Dec. 16, 2011, with another woman, Chastity S. Torro, 45, of Asbury Park. The indictment was handed up by a Freehold grand jury May 9.

Mayor Matt Doherty will be on-hand for Bella Buddha's ribbon cutting ceremony
Bella Buddha yoga studio at 921 Main Street in Belmar will celebrate their grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday, May 9, at 5 p.m., the studio's owner said. The studio, which offers yoga, dance and fitness classes for children, teens, adults and seniors, will have several borough officials, including Mayor Matt Doherty, on-hand for the ceremony and festivities to follow the ribbon cutting, owner Brenda Yarnold said. The festivities will include food provided by Live Jolly, live drumming and music by Yogi Ananda, hula hooping, and a belly dance demonstration by Mihrima. Arrested in Belmar last week, made first appearance in Superior Court Monday
A homeless man made his initial appearance in Superior Court Monday after he was arrested in Belmar last week for allegedly breaking into a shed in a borough resident's backyard, documents show. Darren Guarino, 43, was arrested May 4 after police said they found he had unlawfully entered the shed in the 500 block of 13th Avenue, the criminal complaint says. Guarino also faces criminal mischief charges for allegedly breaking the shed door, and was charged with preventing law enforcement from effecting an arrest, the complaint says. His bail was set at $2500, documents show.

About 13,000 runners participate in 2012 race
The many changes to the 2012 New Jersey Marathon, including a new starting location and time, did not stop tens of thousands of runners and spectators from flocking to Oceanport and Long Branch on Sunday morning. About 13,000 participants, including a few from Manasquan and Belmar, enjoyed a perfect day and raced through the streets of several local towns as they raced to a finish on the Promenade in Long Branch. Manasquan resident Kelly O'Boyle, 35, placed in the top 25 of the female ages 35-39 category, according to the official race results. O'Boyle finished 625th overall. The race's new starting location of Monmouth Park eased parking and some traffic concerns for participants, and a shuttle service to and from the race track helped …
