Vintage Base Ball re-creators entertain on a sunny Saturday afternoon
The outfielder waited as the ball flew his direction off the bat of the batsman ... and as it dropped in front of him, he grabbed it off the bounce. "One hand!" called the arbitrator, announcing the out. "I'll never get used the bounce," said Pat Melango, a member of the Belmar Historical Society, as she settled into her lawn chair to watch. "I'll be glad when they're catching the fly balls." This was baseball -- not the baseball of the 21st century, with fireballin' pitchers and home run hitters, but baseball of the 19th century, when the fielders played without gloves, the pitchers threw underhand and the batters got a warning before the first strike was called. "We are baseball re-creators," said Brad "Brooklyn" Shaw, leader of the …

With senior slugger out for season, Warriors start 2012 on fire at the plate
Before the 2012 high school baseball season even started, the Manasquan program already suffered it's biggest loss when senior first baseman and Monmouth University recruit Tyler Saito to a severe knee injury late in the football season. While the Warriors lost their top slugger away from the diamond, the team has yet to lose on it in 2012. Manasquan is off to a 2-0 start thanks to late-inning outbursts that beat Lakewood and Point Pleasant Boro. In those two games, the Warriors have scored a combined 26 runs, all without the big bat of Saito looming in the middle of the batting order. "Don't get me wrong, if someone offered me Tyler Saito to put back in the lineup, I'd take him in a heartbeat," Warriors third-year head coach Dennis Van …

Baseball coach went 39-12 in two seasons with Purple Roses
Jerry Frulio confirmed on Thursday morning that he is not being brought back as St. Rose's baseball coach after going 39-12 in two seasons, including a 22-4 campaign this spring. Frulio said he was told the program "was moving in a different direction.'' "To me, it had nothing to do with the product we put out on the field,'' Frulio said. St. Rose athletic director Joe Lafferty said that it was school policy that he could not comment on personnel decisions. The Purple Roses won the Class B Central overall title, reached the quarterfinals of the Shore Conference Tournament and made the NJSIAA Non-Public South B semifinals this season. Frulio, who is a Central Regional graduate and former head coach of the Golden Eagles, took over at St. …

St. Rose pitcher ends an emotional year with letter of intent signing
It's been a whirlwind season for St. Rose pitcher Nick Morrissey. The senior pitcher, who posted dominant performances for the Purple Roses as a starter, capped off a tumultuous year Monday afternoon when he signed his letter of intent with Sacred Heart University. Surrounded by school officials and his parents, Rob and Joan, Morrissey put pen to paper to make his fall trip to Fairfield, CT official. "I'm just so proud of him," his father said. "He's been so strong for us and he's persevered." The ups and downs and pressure that comes with being the standout performer on a competitive team not withstanding, it was a personal tragedy that would have been most likely to topple Morrissey's winning season. Early this spring, Morrissey lost his…

We are truly appalled in the manner which Coach Frulio was dismissed as coach. Really? Couldn't he , at the VERY least, have had some time to enjoy the amazing season that his team accomplished? This year's team played with so much HEART, it breaks mine to see him go. While I mean no disrespect to St. Rose, perhaps a lesson in the Beatitudes is in order......   more ›
