Bridgework scheduled for May 15

May 15 bridgework is expected to create traffic delays through 3 p.m. today on Main Street between Belmar and Avon. The county project began this morning with work on the bridge, and drivers are warned their may be lane closures and traffic backups on both sides as a result. Additionally, portions of 13th in Belmar are open to local traffic only as a project there proceeds.  Ocean Avenue in Belmar south of 13th Avenue is also currently closed for the final days of boardwalk reconstruction there. Construction crews are present throughout the length of Ocean Avenue in Belmar to install railings and beachfront playgrounds throughout the week.

Countdown to Memorial Day

Avon Parking Rules Switch May 1

Diagonal parking, not parallel parking, takes effect

It's time to change direction: parking in Avon will switch from parallel parking to diagonal parking spots starting May 1. The annual switch to diagonal parking spots comes every May 1 on designated streets, and lasts through Nov. 14. Parallel parking is in effect from Nov. 15 to April 30 annually, according to borough ordinance. It's not the only borough law in effect starting May 1. From then through Oct. 1, dogs are not permitted on the beach. They are allowed between Oct. 2 to April 30. However, Avon law does not ever permit dogs on the boardwalk.

Belmar was very wise to get a head start on the construction. After the boardwalk is finished there will be enough time to clean up & do plantings. That will allow Belmar to present a much better appearance to guests who come to enjoy the Summer here. With all the important visitors & publicity Belmar is expecting this year, that will possibly mean more work will be available for area residents …   more ›

Hurricane Sandy

PHOTOS: Avon Beachfront Progresses With Boardwalk Pilings

South side has new pilings

Just before the newly opened Ocean Avenue bridge, construction on Avon's boardwalk is progressing behind high chain-link fence. New pilings are in place there, but the chipped cement blocks of the wall adjacent to the sidewalk, and older, damaged pilings are the signs that mark further construction left on the Avon beachfront. Here are some photos from this week on Ocean Avenue in Avon.

It'll be beautiful when the boardwalk is finally completed. I'm looking to put a chain link fence up in my home. Does anybody have any experience with chain link fence builders in Vancouver? I'd rather by from someone recommended then some stranger. Thanks.   more ›

PHOTOS: Snow Scenes Around Belmar

Light snow looks pretty, but be careful of slippery roads

This gallery around Belmar and Avon Friday creates a pretty scene of the area's light snowfall blanketing tree limb, mail box and boardwalk piling.  Check out these photos from Belmar resident Paul Spennrath, and consider uploading your own images from this morning's snow to the gallery. Accumulations less than 3 inches are forecast with weekend sun expected to not keep the snow around long. Could this be our last snowfall of the season? Here's what 8th Avenue and B street looks like, as well as First and Ocean and the Silver Lake. In Avon near Lincoln and Ocean Avenues, a snowy scene under boardwalk construction.

Chasm Between Avon And Restaurant Still Wide

Avon Borough, Pavilion began talks over abrupt revocation of the lease for the boardwalk restaurant

Avon Borough officials and the owner of the Avon Pavilion are at least one step closer an agreement after the two had an hourlong sit down on Thursday to discuss the controversy surrounding the longtime boardwalk restaurant. Rob Fishman, pavilion owner, and Avon Borough Administrator Tim Gallagher spent about an hour on Thursday talking about the gulf that separates Fishman and the majority of the elected officials in town regarding the rebuilding of the Avon Pavilion. But the two sides came to no concrete agreement, said Dennis A. Collins, Wall Township-based attorney for Fishman. The Avon Board of Commissioners, the borough’s governing body, on Jan. 28 abruptly voted to void Fishman’s lease on the restaurant, at first saying that a …

The town keeps shifting their story of why they are holding up this reconstruction. Maybe because it would look bad to say they want to break their word for more money because of greed. They need to honor their contract & stop acting like this is a negotiation rather than an attempt to use the storm to dispossess the business.   more ›

Avon Mayor: Pavilion Lease Is Illegal

Avon Mayor Robert Mahon says the lease is illegal and Hurricane Sandy gave the town the cover it needed to terminate it

The lease between the borough of Avon and the owners of the Avon Pavilion was illegal, and Hurricane Sandy provided the town the impetus it needed to finally terminate it, Avon Mayor Robert Mahon said Monday. At an afternoon workshop session of the Avon Board of Commissioners attended by an audience of about 70 mainly supporters of Rob Fishman, Avon Pavilion owner, Mahon interjected into a public comment period his reasons for making the controversial move a week ago. In a surprise move, the commissioners on Jan. 28 voted 2-1 to revoke the Pavilion’s lease, claiming state law mandated voiding lease agreements on structures destroyed by an act of nature, such as Hurricane Sandy. But at Monday’s meeting, Mahon provided a different …

What goes around, comes around Avon needs to watch not to get too big for its britches.Whatever the ins and outs of the prior leases, the bottom line is that the Avon Pavilion brought many people to the boardwalk and the Fishmans became an integral part of summers in Avon. This all could have been handled in a more professional and respectful way between the parties but it sounds like a decision …   more ›

UPDATE: State Investigating Brown Water Off Monmouth Beaches

Flyover on Thursday found no evidence of algae bloom, DEP says

Because of reports of greenish brown, dirty-looking water at the beaches around Asbury Park, Avon and Bradley Beach, the state Department of Environmental Protection is looking into the water quality off Shore Area beaches, according to its website. The Monmouth County Health Department has identified a variety of species of dinoflagellates -- planktonic plants -- in the waters at the those beaches. These microscopic plants are generally not toxic to humans but in very heavy concentrations may be toxic to fish and shellfish because they remove oxygen from the water, according to the DEP. Additional samples are being collected by the DEP's Bureau of Marine Water Monitoring and at the beaches by the Monmouth County Health Department, …
