New Jersey Arts Education Census Project surveys nearly all schools
A statewide survey of arts education programs in New Jersey schools to be released Thursday finds a positive correlation between schools with more arts education programs and greater proficiency scores on the language sections of the state's High School Proficiency Assessment. The report is a follow-up to one conducted in 2007, and is a joint project of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, the state Department of Education, Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, New Jersey Arts Education Partnership, ArtPride New Jersey Foundation, and Quadrant Arts Education Research. An opening reception was held Saturday, July 16 to showcase new displays
Fragments: An Enterprise in Mixed-Media Art is the newest exhibit at the Belmar Arts Council [BAC], which was introduced Saturday night at the memorable opening ceremony. On River Road in Belmar, artists, art enthusiasts, family and friends gathered to commemorate the pieces that will be on display until Aug. 20. The purpose of the displayed art work was for the pieces to be fragmented, according to Alison Bowie, curator of the art alongside Alexandra Martin. Some examples that were given to prospective artists included collages, mosaics and cubism, according to Bowie. “The idea was to take pieces of different things and make them whole,” Bowie said. The Spring Lake Community House will continue its tradition of community theatre excellence in the new year.
The Spring Lake Theatre Company recently wrapped its 2010 year with the annual run of the holiday classic "Scrooge." Now the group will focus on productions for 2011. Auditions have already been completed for the Community House's first production of the new year, British playwright Noel Coward's "Blithe Spirit." The show will run every Friday and Saturday evening at 8 p.m. throughout the month of February. The show, described as a "supernatural comedy"," is about a man who is visited by the ghost of his first wife. In April and May, the Spring Lake Theatre Company will perform "The Drowsy Chaperone," a musical comedy that harkens back to the heyday of American musicals. The show will be performed on April 8, 9, 15 and 16 and May 6, 7, 13 …
