University commencement speaker Mark Emmert wishes graduates well
It was a "day of great significance" for the 981 graduates of Monmouth University on Wednesday afternoon. Those were the words used by Monmouth University Board of Trustees Chairman Robert Sculthorpe as he addressed the crowd of graduates, parents and teachers who filled the PNC Bank Arts Center. "Remember you are Hawks, and Hawks spread their wings and soar," Sculthorpe said. "You are the reason we do what we do." This year's commencement speaker was NCAA President Mark Emmert, who said he was happy because he "got to be a member of the class of 2012." Emmert spoke of the importance of sports in students lives and said student-athletes actually have higher graduation rates than those who are not student-athletes. "Sports provide us with …

Male students to live on campus and compete in athletics
Georgian Court University announced a change on Tuesday that will dramatically change the face of the Lakewood school in the fall of 2013. The school will go co-ed after having served as a school for women since it opened more than 100 years ago. The school, which had only allowed men to take classes at night, will allow them to reside on campus as well as take part in the school's athletic program. The decision, according to a school news release, followed "a strategic planning process that began in the summer of 2011." Tara Strickland, the school's assistant editorial director, said having men on the campus will not be new as they have been allowed to attend graduate classes since 1976 and regular classes since 1979. But fall 2013 will …
National education initiative reshaping K-12 curriculum
The Manasquan School District is bracing for sweeping changes to its curriculum and standardized tests as part of a national initiative to streamline U.S. students' core standards. New common core state standards (CCSS), with a more rigorous curriculum in language arts and math, must be implemented by the end of this year, while a new standardized assessment test to be taken entirely online — Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) — will hit classrooms for the 2014-15 school year. Last week, Schools Superintendent Geraldine Margin outlined the district's plan to prepare its students for the new standards, which she says will move the state's K-12 schools toward a more national curriculum. By the end of …

Extra cleaning crews on hand Wednesday night, officials said
Additional cleaning crews were scheduled at the Wall Primary School Wednesday night following the discovery of one identified case of MRSA, school officials said. In a letter sent home Wednesday to parents, Interim Superintendent Stephanie Bilenker said the district is taking extra precautions in light of the discovery. MRSA is the acronym for Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, a drug-resistant bacteria easily communicable through usually not harmful unless there is a break in the skin, Bilenker said in the letter. "We are going above and beyond our normal cleaning and disinfecting routine," Bilenker said in the letter. "Starting Wednesday night (5/9/12) additional custodial staff will be assigned to the Primary School." A heavy-…
New Jersey Arts Education Census Project surveys nearly all schools
A statewide survey of arts education programs in New Jersey schools to be released Thursday finds a positive correlation between schools with more arts education programs and greater proficiency scores on the language sections of the state's High School Proficiency Assessment. The report is a follow-up to one conducted in 2007, and is a joint project of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, the state Department of Education, Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, New Jersey Arts Education Partnership, ArtPride New Jersey Foundation, and Quadrant Arts Education Research. According to Robert Morrison, project coordinator of the report and founder of Quadrant Arts Education Research, the report compiled survey responses from about 99 percent of…

Executive committee approves proposal to add Group V
Beginning this fall, 160 high school football teams around the state will have the opportunity to win a state sectional championship, under a proposal approved by the NJSIAA this afternoon. The NJSIAA Executive Committee approved the proposal to create a Group V designation in the four public school sections by a vote of 22-5-3 at its meeting in Robbinsville, according to Jack DuBois, NJSIAA assistant director who's in charge of football. "This creates a greater opportunity for schools and for student-athletes," DuBois said. "It increases the number of teams playing in the playoffs from 128 to 160. At the same time, it eliminates 16 consolation games that schools didn't want to play anyway." The proposal also allows teams whose records are…
Presentations, policies discussed at BOE work session
The Manasquan Board of Education's Tuesday work session meeting included two presentations on the district's special education program and its preparations for new standardized tests set to be implemented in 2014. The board also voted to accept the job description for its new paraprofessional and rescinded its recent motion to report a monthly log of Open Public Records Act (OPRA) requests at meetings. Members also discussed whether or not to send requests for proposals to have a parcel of district-owned land on Sea Girt Avenue appraised for a possible sale. Here's the rundown: *** The district's special education supervisor, Margaret Polack, said during her presentation to the board that she expects the number of special education …
