Belmar Woman's Club Holds Arts and Crafts Event

The Belmar Woman's Club held their annual Arts and Crafts show Saturday

Those in need for a last minute Mother’s Day present were in luck on Saturday morning, as the Belmar Woman’s Club sponsored an arts and craft fair at the Taylor Pavilion, full of various goodies one could buy for their mother.

Peggy Dean, chair of the Belmar Woman’s Club, noted there was a great turnout for the event this year, with 30 different vendors setting up their goods all throughout the Taylor Pavilion, right on the Belmar Boardwalk.

“This is a great turnout, and there is a great variety of selections available for patrons of all ages,” she said.

This event also doubled as a fundraiser for the Belmar Woman’s Club’s education fund. Proceeds from the group’s 50/50 raffle, as well as food and drink sold in the Taylor Pavilion kitchen, went toward the education fund.

“The education fund will provide for a scholarship to a Belmar resident,” said Maria Boccia, President of the Belmar Woman’s Club.

Boccia noted this fair has been an annual event in the borough for over ten years, and one that many residents as well as out-of-towners look forward to coming to every year.

“Crafters from all over the area come out for this event,” she said, adding that they love seeing the variety of goods that the crafters bring with them to the fair at the Taylor Pavilion.

Boccia brought some crafts that she personally knit to sell at the event, including some small blankets and bonnets. Some of the other vendors in attendance sold toys, while others sold homemade jams and honey.

Some of the many well received booths included Karen Lewis’ “The Bear Facts,” which sold a variety of handcrafted bears and assorted knitting work, and Roy P. Scheckermann’s “Sweet Pea Tea,” a booth which sold honey, tea and even homemade soaps.

One popular booth was that of Donna Abbey, who brought homemade bread and pies to sell at this event. She noted that all of the food was homegrown, using her own apples and other assorted dried fruit to bake various breads and pies.

Abbey said she loved coming out to this event, as she has for the past 10 years. She added with the beautiful weather and location right on the Belmar boardwalk, it was an event that could not be beat.

“I truly do think Belmar has the best beach in all of New Jersey,” she said.

The next Belmar Woman’s Club event will take place in July at the Waterview Pavilion. This event will be a flower show, where judges will be brought in to judge the flowers and award prizes to the people who bring in the most interesting flowers.
