Belmar's 'Buy a Board' Campaign Extends Donation Deadline to May 15

Original deadline was April 30

Procrastinators hoping to have their name displayed on the rebuilt Belmar boardwalk can rejoice: the borough has extended its "Buy a Board" campaign to May 15.

The original deadline was April 30, but Mayor Matt Doherty announced at Wednesday's council meeting that the borough would be accepting donations through May 15.

"Buy a Board" is a fundraiser that will put names on boardwalk entrances and funds in the boardwalk rebuilding coffers.

The "Buy a Board" campaign allows donors to give money to the borough, specifically to buy the actual boards that make up the boardwalk, and have their name displayed at beach entrances. The borough set a deadline in order to have enough time to write out all the names of the donors.

Belmar's boardwalk was destroyed in the surge of Hurricane Sandy, and the borough is using grants, bonds, FEMA reimbursement, to offset the cost, with the "Buy a Board" campaign is part of that effort. The borough has set up donor levels ranging from $5,000 to $25.

Doherty said the campaign even during its hard copy launch is a resounding success. More than $600,000 has been collected, mostly through the borough website.

Board level options are as follows:

· $5,000 Big Kahuna
· $2,500 Surf Rider
· $1,000 Sun Worshiper
· $500 Boogie Boarder
· $250 Board Runner
· $100 Clam Digger
· $25 Beach Bum

Contributors will also be able to have their name and board level displayed on a beach entrance of their choice.

The bigger the contribution, the bigger your name, Doherty said.
