Weekly Warrior: Lady Warriors Prep for State Tournament

The postseason is right around the corner and the girls basketball team is looking to make a run.

The regular season is winding down and with that comes the postseason. While the girls basketball team is looking ahead to the state tournament, the boys team barely missed out on getting in.

Let's take a look at this week's Weekly Warrior.

Boys Basketball
The Warriors let a lead slip away against Holmdel on Saturday. A late layup sealed the Warriors fate and an eight-point lead entering the third quarter wasn't quite enough as they fell to the Hornets, 58-57. Nick Lustrino finished the game with 16 points for the Warriors.

The team rebounded quickly and on Monday, 43-35. That win against the Dragons got them going in the right direction. Just a day later, the Warriors got back to .500 on the season with a win over Jackson Liberty.

A slow start by both teams gave way to a higher scoring second half, but the Warriors had enough to edge the Lions, 42-38. Lustrino scored 13 points to pace the team and Jimmy Walsh chipped in with 10 points.

Girls Basketball
On the backs of Michaela Mabrey and Katelynn Flaherty, the Lady Warriors beat Holmdel on Satuday, 71-49. The two scored all but 10 of their team points. Flaherty finished with 34 points and Mabrey had 27 to help the team coast.

It was a little more of a balanced effort on Tuesday against Jackson Liberty. Flaherty and Mabrey each scored 20 points, but five other players also got in the box score in a 65-29 win over the Lions.

With the two wins, they were awarded the sixth-seed in the South Jersey Group II State Tournament. They'll host the 11th-seed Haddon Heights on February 28 at 6 p.m.

Wrestling
The Warriors had a tough week going 1-4 in their matches.

The lone win came on Monday against Keyport in a 48-24 victory. Cassin Loures, Evan Walsh, Justin Popa, Mike Panzino, Corey Phillips, Ben Warner, Sean Colligan and Harry Warner all won their matches to help the Warriors to the victory.

During the week, the Warriors fell to Point Pleasant Beach (55-18), Freehold Borough (48-27), Shore Regional (60-7) and Red Bank Catholic (45-19).

Ice Hockey
The Warriors got two goals from Charlie Mills and one from Kyle Wainwright and Connor Grogan to help defeat Manalapan, 4-3, on Wednesday.
