CBA Runners Racing to Beat 2011's Amazing Success

Four of Christian Brothers Academy's top seven cross-country team runner have returned from the 2011 National Championship Team. Already, they are showing improvement.

Coming off its first national title and 17th Meet of Champions title, the Christian Brothers Academy cross-country team has its eyes set on another potential historic season.

“We just want to be the best that we can possibly be,” head coach Tom Heath said. “We need to get to where they can run.”

Seniors Jack Boyle of Avon, Bill Bragg of Middletown, and Aaron Liberatore of Marlboro and junior Mike McClemens are the four returners from last year’s top seven.

“I don’t think any of us will be happy unless we return and win the national championship again,” Bragg said.

The team already indicated signs of being better than the 2011 squad. Heath said that during their preseason time trial on Friday, they averaged a school record 9:29 on the 2.05-mile course on the CBA campus—12 seconds faster than last year’s team.

“Theoretically we could be significantly better than last year,” Heath said. “But it doesn’t mean anything right now.”

The team has spent the summer training at CBA and Holmdel Park and will begin the 2012 season on Tuesday, Sept. 11 in a dual meet against Colts Neck—where CBA expects to extend its national record dual-meet winning streak to 316.

Their first invitational meet will be the Bowdoin Classic on Sept. 22 in Wappinger Falls, NY, where the Nike Cross Northeast Regionals will also be held on Nov. 24.

The NJSIAA Meet of Champions will be held at Holmdel Park on Nov. 17 where Heath expects Don Bosco, Holmdel, West-Windsor South, and Pope John XXIII to be among their top competition for the title.

Nike Cross Nationals will be held at Portland Meadows in Portland, Ore. on Dec. 1.
