St. Rose Grammar School Brings Home Hoops Gold

All four squads brought home division championships

The boys and girls basketball teams at St. Rose Grammar School have much to celebrate at the end of the 2010-2011 season.

Both the varsity and junior varsity squads for boys and girls brought home first-place finishes across the board in the Monmouth and Ocean County Parochial Basketball League B Division Championship.

The boys varsity win came in dramatic fashion with a 61-53 victory in overtime against Holy Family. Eighth grader Kevin Fazio had only four seconds left in regulation when he sunk a tying shot that sent the game into overtime. The team came alive in the overtime period and eventually walked away with an eight-point victory. John Patrick Krotulis, a seventh-grader, was named the game's Most Valuable Player after scoring 18 points for the Roses.

The girls varsity championship came with a win over nearby rivals St. Denis of Manasquan, 32-19.

The boys junior varsity would also need to overcome St. Denis to claim their title. The defense came alive in the second half, keeping their rivals to just one point and winning the game 19-14.

The girls junior varsity owed their victory to a major offensive push in the fourth quarter, when they outscored St. Verionica 10-2 on their way to a 41-32 victory. Ava Reverendo, a sixth-grader, was the most valuable player.
